"Corruption or mismanagement by employees or partners of non-British houses frequently made news during the century. One of the more celebrated cases was the failure of Sebastian Lezica Brothers in September 1835. The manager of the house a German named Frederick Hornung apparently forged bills of exchange without the knowledge of his employers three Argentine brothers. After the failure of a British house Thwaites and Company and after the retention of money in the Chilean branch the Lezica Brothers had to raise money. Originally Hartung procured the signatures of a number of people including Thwaites; but when persons declined he began to forge names on bills of exchange--both the drawer's and drawee's names--in order to prevent bankruptcy. He thought this would need to be done for only a short time but he became involved until the total sum owed the market was over one and a half million pesos." Reber. Green the postmaster of Malden Massachusetts is believed to be the first person to rob an American bank. He was "a 'secretly drinking man' and had been short on his post office accounts. On December 15 1863 finding the bank manned solely by the seventeen-year-old son of the president he went back for his gun. Entering the bank he shot the youth twice through the head and carried off $5000. in bills. The crime was very quickly traced to him; his confession disclosed where he had hidden the money and he was condemned to die" McDade annotation to 381. Only edition. Danby was a prominent political figure who served in a variety of offices under Kings Charles II and William III. In 1678 Danby had endorsed King Charles's demand for payment by King Louis of France to avoid war. This issue was related to the hysteria surrounding the Popish Plot. A faction in Parliament treated this support as an assumption of royal authority which led eventually to his impeachment and imprisonment in the Tower for five years. Sir William Parkyns also spelled Parkins or Perkins was an English lawyer who was executed for his part in the first Jacobite Rebellion which aimed to restore the exiled James II to the English throne after the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Parkyns did not participate personally; he purchased military equipment and ammunition for the Jacobites which he stored in his country house. Parkyns defended himself in court without success. Although the district attorney claimed to be reluctant to pursue the matter Catholic authorities had asked that the question be settled before the court. Strang shot Elsie's husband John Whipple after several unsuccessful attempts by the lovers to poison him. Strang was convicted and executed. Elsie was tried individually and acquitted. From an edition limited to 300 copies this number 87. Babeuf publisher of the Tribun du Peuple was executed in 1797 for his role in the Conspiracy of Equals to overthrow the Directoire. This conspiracy is significant as the first attempt to install a socialist government. Gahenna's fine-press volume about Babeuf's trial contains English translations of selections from Babeuf's defense Marechal's Manifesto of Equals and Babeuf's peroration his last words to the court which were addressed to his children. An American artist and illustrator Cornell was drawn to subjects concerning global social and environmental justice. The book was printed by Harold McGrath the suite of etchings by Emiliano Sorini. The Thayer brothers Nelson Israel and Isaac were convicted in 1825 for the robbery and murder of their boarder John Love to whom they owed a substantial amount of money. The brothers shot him in the head then lacerated his body with a meat cleaver. After disguising the murder scene with a pig carcass they buried Love in a shallow grave. Their crime was discovered a short while later. After two brief trials the Thayers were executed together by hanging on June 17 1825. A sensational event it was probably the first hanging to take place in Erie County New York. This event was the subject of sveral pamphlets four published in Buffalo. In this edition the dying address is followed by an account of the trial and execution in verse. This imprint which is listed in Cohen and mentioned in McDade is a variant of a copy described in McDade which has an image of a single coffin. McDade The Annals of Murder 972. Henry Parish a New York merchant died in 1856 at age 69. He left a will made in 1842 that had been amended with three codicils signed by him some time after suffering a paralyzing stroke in 1849. These codicils were contested on the grounds of mental impairment. This trial attracted a good deal of attention and it involved testimony by several leading medical and legal experts.
