A very clean and attractive copy."Human Leopards is the name given to a criminal society whose members band together to commit murder to obtain human body parts fat and blood for the creation of a medicine Borfima thought to imbue its possessors with supernatural powers guaranteeing success in their undertakings. It was alleged that the society members concealed themselves in leopard skins and used a special three pronged knife when killing their selected victims so that the deaths would be blamed on leopards. They were also said to practise cannibalism. There were repeated reports of human leopard activity in Sherbro and Mende chiefdoms in Bonthe district in the 1890s and 1900s and the Colonial Government passed ordinances outlawing membership of this and similar societies such as Human Alligator and Human Baboon societies and set up special circuit courts to deal with offenders. A number of individuals were subsequently tried and found guilty of being involved in human leopard murders some of whom confessed to their crimes; but as with witchcraft trials in Europe it is not easy to separate the reality behind the human leopard reports from the moral panic they aroused." Burt achieved great eminence during his lifetime in 1946 becoming the first British psychologist to be knighted as a reward for his research. Burt's methodologies came into question after his death however and it is now widely believed he falsified much of his data particularly that relating to the inheritance of IQ. Nonetheless the current work remains compelling for both its wealth of detailed personal case studies of British delinquents and the numerous photographic portraits which though clearly staged portray genuine subjects and are classics in their genre. Holograph text in pencil and ink. Leather edgeworn with several small chips/loss to sides and lower edge; title label stained and toned; faint center crease to rear cover; occasional minor soiling. A year in the beat of Fall River patrolman Obadiah Knott providing a day-by-day account of his activities while on patrol. For the most part these are fairly mundane things: he notes the number of gas lights burning on his route checks that doors are locked and occasionally gets called upon to break up groups of loud drunks. Often people disperse themselves running away when they see him coming; other times he is merely resolving misunderstandings. Nevertheless numerous arrests are reported mostly for larceny and disturbing the peace witnesses corralled warrants given and at one point he notes "On Duty on Wellington St. while small pox patients where sic being carried away" July 20 1903.An uncommon personal record of a policeman's activities while walking his beat. hardcover

Verso has stamps recent sticker and colored pencil notation as well as evidence of paper removal probably another snipe and light spotting; shallow chip to lower border and tiny loss to lower corner neither affecting body of image. Good.</p><p>Press photograph of legendary speakeasy proprietor Belle Livingston immediately following her release from jail in March 1931 after being incarcerated for 30 days for contempt of court after being arrested for violations of the Volstead Act i.e. Prohibition. In the photograph Livingston stands in the center of a large crowd outside a police car while police officers and a reporter look on. The snipe reads:</p><p>"Crowds Greet Belle after Release from Jail: New York -- Belle Livingston owner of New York's most luxurious night club surrounded by a huge crowd of her admirers immediately after her release from the Harlem jail where she was sentenced to thirty days for contempt of court. La Belle was convicted of defying a federal prohibition injunction at her famous night life rendezvous. N-3-8-31."</p><p>Belle Livingston 1875-1957 was a traveling theater performer who ran her own salon in Paris prior to moving to New York in 1927 at the age of 52 when she tried her hand at speakeasies aimed at the high society crowd. Although her first and second clubs failed quickly due to lack of funds and federal raids her third -- the Fifty-Eighth Street Country Club at 126 E. 58th St.-- was a major hit while it lasted. Her October 1930 opening night drew such guests as Russia's Archduke Leopold John D. Rockefeller the Duke of Manchester and Al Capone. However the establishment was soon raided by federal agents and Livingston who famously tried to escape while wearing red silk pajamas only managed to keep the Country Club open until January 1931. After her release from jail she tried opening speakeasies out West but never managed to make a go of it. There are several short tears at the folds with some light red staining below the text. There is some light soiling at bottom right and there is a crease & tear to & a small piece out of the bottom right corner. Good. <p>Abdullah writes to future congressman Seymour Halpern that he is too busy to see anyone but "I am sending by this mail the signed picture to your friend."<p>Achmed Abdullah who claimed descent from the Russian imperial family and was educated in England emigrated to the United States in the 1910s. He went on to become an American author and screenwriter most noted for his pulp stories of crime mystery and adventure. He wrote screenplays for some successful films and earned an Academy Award nomination for collaborating on the screenplay for the 1935 film "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer".<p>The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. New York: circa [1930]. unknown

"His career was a long series of swindling and imposture very ingeniously carried out He continued his course of vagabond roguery for some time was convicted of being a vagrant and sentenced to be transported to Maryland. On his arrival escaped and fell into the hands of some friendly Indians. - DNB. According to Howes C132 Carew "operated confidence games among colonial suckers from Virginia to Connecticut - the memorable first of a long line of such artists who have continued to flourish in this climate." He returned to Scotland about 1745. Also described here are his picaresque adventures among gypsies on the Continent and in London. This "Popular Edition" contains "A Vocabulary of Words used by the Scottish Gipsies" "A Few Sentences in the Gipsy Language" and "A Dictionary of the Cant Language generally used by Mendicants." This edition is not cited in Black's GYPSY BIBLIOGRAPHY but seems to be an expanded edition of Black's item 768 circa 1870. This copy has the 1898 bookplate of Roger de Coverly. Could this be the bookbinder Roger de Coverly who apprenticed with Joseph Zaehnsdorf After ten years at Leighton's Coverly formed his own bindery and did work for many important clients including William Morris.
