Contains two important investigative reports by the Committee on Internal Security i.e. the renamed House Un-American Activities Committee: Anatomy of a Revolutionary Movement: "Students for a Democratic Society" No. 1565: vii 175 xiii pp. with photographs; and Report of Inquiry Concerning Speakers' Honoraria at Colleges and Universities No. 1732: xii 52pp. Both were conducted under the direction of Richard H. Ichord the Committee's Chairman a fervent anti-Communist who crusaded against the Peace Movement during the Vietnam War. The report on Students for a Democratic Society and associated New Left groups includes an illustration of FBI Wanted Poster for William Charles "Bill" Ayers that was used by House Republicans to discredit President Barack Obama. The report on Speakers' Honoraria undertaken to investigate the possibility that New Left radical groups and organizations were financing their activities through speaking engagements includes the Dissenting View of African-American Congressman Louis Stokes of Ohio. Also included in this volume are three timely reports by the Select Committee on Crime on drug use and related criminal activities among urban and counterculture youth: Juvenile Justice and Corrections No. 1806: v 85pp.; Amphetamines No. 1807: v 44pp.; and Heroin and Heroin Paraphernalia: Second Report by the Select Committee on Crime No. 1808: v 83pp. A nice copy scarce in the trade. A very clean and attractive copy."Human Leopards is the name given to a criminal society whose members band together to commit murder to obtain human body parts fat and blood for the creation of a medicine Borfima thought to imbue its possessors with supernatural powers guaranteeing success in their undertakings. It was alleged that the society members concealed themselves in leopard skins and used a special three pronged knife when killing their selected victims so that the deaths would be blamed on leopards. They were also said to practise cannibalism. There were repeated reports of human leopard activity in Sherbro and Mende chiefdoms in Bonthe district in the 1890s and 1900s and the Colonial Government passed ordinances outlawing membership of this and similar societies such as Human Alligator and Human Baboon societies and set up special circuit courts to deal with offenders. A number of individuals were subsequently tried and found guilty of being involved in human leopard murders some of whom confessed to their crimes; but as with witchcraft trials in Europe it is not easy to separate the reality behind the human leopard reports from the moral panic they aroused." An apparently unrecorded work on the grisly murder of Francis Cestonaro in 1779 by his wife Veneranda Porta and her lover Stefano Fantini. Cestonaro's body was cut up and the various parts dumped in the Venice canals. The murderers were hanged and Fantini was fittingly drawn and quartered. The story has passed into Venetian legend - William Dean Howells recounts it in Venetian Life as one of the three quintessential Venetian tragic legends that every gondolier has at the ready to recount.
