Hapgood a sometime anarchist and full-time free-lover was in the first wave of Greenwich Village bohemians; his celebratory accounts of Manhattan's seedier sections have long stood as scarce classics of New York writing. 193034866New York: circa 1930. 1930. Good. - 41 words typed on an approximately 10 inch high by 8 inch wide sheet of his personalized letterhead. Signed "A Abdullah". Folded 3 times for mailing. There are several short tears at the folds with some light red staining below the text. There is some light soiling at bottom right and there is a crease & tear to & a small piece out of the bottom right corner. Good. <p>Abdullah writes to future congressman Seymour Halpern that he is too busy to see anyone but "I am sending by this mail the signed picture to your friend."<p>Achmed Abdullah who claimed descent from the Russian imperial family and was educated in England emigrated to the United States in the 1910s. He went on to become an American author and screenwriter most noted for his pulp stories of crime mystery and adventure. He wrote screenplays for some successful films and earned an Academy Award nomination for collaborating on the screenplay for the 1935 film "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer".<p>The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. New York: circa [1930]. unknown

A rare small broadside advertising a true crime presentation including real footage related to the shooting death of famed gangster John Dillinger. This "sensational story" most likely a newsreel mixed with a reenactment of Dillinger's assassination promised to show "actual authentic pictures" "the ambulance that hauled him away" and "Dillinger's body on a cold slab in the undertakers morgue." The herald includes a portrait of Dillinger himself. The Dillinger film was paired with an action western from 1930 titled Trails of Danger. An early entry in American true crime and a wonderful display piece. unknown

Ahmed Vâlâ Nureddin (Vâ-Nû) born in Istanbul 1901, died in Istanbul 1967; journalist and writer; pseudonyms: Hatice Süreyya, Ali Marmara and Vâ-Nû; educated at the French-speaking Galatasaray Lyceum in Istanbul and in 1917 at the Vienna School of Economics; after his return to Turkey he became a teacher in Bolu; left for Moscow, together with Nazim Hikmet, in 1921; graduated at the Kommunisticeskij Universitet Trudjascichsja Vostoka (KUTV, Communist University of the Workers of the East) in 1925; returned to Turkey in 1928; contributed to the newspapers Aksam (Evening) and Cumhuriyet (Republic) with columns, reviews, polemics and reports; in later years, together with Rasim Us, editor of the newspaper Haber (News); author of novels and short stories (under the pseudonyms Hatice Süreyya, Ali Marmara and other names) and of `Bu Dünyadan Nazim Geçti, his reminiscences of Nazim Hikmet, published in 1965; Vâ-Nû was married to the novelist Müzehher Vâ-Nû (born in 1912). Vâ-Nû is one of the first authors of Turkish detective novel.
