Measures 15" x 10 7/8"<br/> <br/> Beautiful print of a jewelled lizard from "Iconografia della Fauna Italica Per Le Quattro Classi Degli Animali Vertebrati" published between 1832-1841. <br> <br> Carlo Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte 1803-1857 was a French biologist and ornithologist. As the nephew of Napoleon and the 2nd Prince of Canino he was raised in Italy but moved to Philadelphia shortly after marriage where he worked alongside Alexander Wilson updating his seminal "Wilson's Ornithology or History of the Birds of the United States." After his return to Europe he published "Iconografia della Fauna Italica" describing the animals of Italy and later a similar work comparing birds he observed in Philadelphia with those in Italy. He worked closely with other prominent scientists and naturalists throughout his career including John Edward Gray John James Audubon and Philipp Jakob Cretzschmar. He was a grandson of Lucien Bonaparte Napoleon's brother scholar soldier scientist and photographer. Twenty-eight people from Suriname accompanied by plantation owner William MacIntosh were displayed as human curiosities at the world exhibition in Amsterdam in 1883. The result was the first photobook about the people of Suriname photographed by Friedrich Carel Hisgen. It was the first time that living people were included in a world exhibition. The photographs contain portraits of male and female members of all ages of the Indian and black population groups with an accurate description of their sources of income dress work religion and social institutions. This comprehensive anthropological study on Suriname was among the first to make systematic use of photographs in studying an indigenous group in the Americas. - A monumental book.- Light waterstains in some corners otherwise fine copy. The author Roland Napoléon Bonaparte 6th Prince of Canino and Musignano 1858-1924 was a French prince and president of the Société de Géographie from 1910 until his death Wikipedia. As a renowned traveller and anthropologist he was especially interested in Suriname Dutch Guiana and Dutch New Guinea now Irian Jaya. Printed in very small numbers and therefore rare. Provenance: the name A. Beaujon stamped in both title pages top margin. Anthony Beaujon 1853-1890 was a Dutch professor. Also with a small printed label "Legaat P. A. de Lange" on front wrapper versos. Otherwise very good clean. hardcover

Manuscript letter in French in brown ink on wove paper 3 sides of folded leaf signed and dated. 3 pp. Autograph letter by Joseph Napoléon Bonaparte 1768-1844 the elder brother of Napoleon I of France who made him King of Naples and Sicily 1806-1808 and later King of Spain and the Indies as Joseph I of Spain 1808-1813. After the fall of Napoleon I Joseph styled himself "Comte de Survilliers" and fled to America in 1816. In the present letter Bonaparte thanks the politician Pierre François Réal 1757-1834 for his messages on the recent July Revolution 27-29 July 1830 called "Les Trois Glorieuses" the overthrow of the French Bourbon monarch Charles X at Paris. Bonaparte shows himself disappointed in the role of the Marquis de La Fayette 1757-1834 the famous French general and political leader who had played such a great role in the American Revolution.Some soiling and waterstains a large tear in the folding of the leaf some folds and some tears in the margins. Service de l’aide de campâ€.The polemic book â€Histoire de Napoléon†by the historian and politician Jacques Marquet de Montbreton de Norvins 1769-1854 that was published in 1827 was a major success and it was hightly critical to Napoleon Bonaparte. This reply by Napoleons brother Louis Bonaparte was printed and published by J. Bousquet in 1834 as â€Observations de Louis Bonaparte Cte de St-Leu sur L'Histoire de Napoléon par M. de Norvins". The present manuscript differs from the published text in some details.Louis Bonaparte 1778-1846 brother of Napoleon was in 1806 appointed king of Holland. He was however troublesome and when Napoleon merged Holland with France in 1810 Louis abdicated. He settled as comte de Saint-Leu in Graz and after 1815 he lived in Italy writing historical works. He is father to Charles Louis Napoleon the Emperor Napoleon III. Count Christophe Michel Roguet 1800-77 was marchal and first adjutant to Napoleon III. The letter where he let the reciever know that it’s a very interesting manuscipt was sent to a monsieur F. Chasserieau. unknown
