Only after being told that her dog had cancer did she realize the attachment she developed to Topsy. She describes the emotions she experienced during the time of Topsy's illness and subsequent healing. Written in France and Greece at the onset of World War II the story of Topsy's cancer clearly is intended to convey the ills of Europe at that time.Bonaparte's relationship with her dog reveals her own fears about aging dying being alone as well as the uncertainty of the political situation. As she tells her story Bonaparte is reminded of the experience of her father who also suffered from cancer. Topsy while not written as a scientific study provides insight into the psychoanalytical effects of relationships between humans and animals. It tells us much about one of psychotherapy's founding personages as well as the members of her professional circle in a critical period of European history.In the new introduction Gary Genosko reflects on Sigmund Freud's own affection for and use of dogs in his analyses. He goes on to describe the relationship between Freud and Bonaparte and how dogs played a significant part in that companionship. Avec 8 planches hors texte, 53 gravures, portraits, plans et autographes reproduits d’après des documents originaux, portrait de Louis XIV en frontispice, une reproduction de la première feuille de présence signée par Bonaparte, et une reproduction de la lettre de remerciement de Bonaparte.
Importante e celebrativa incisione opera di Hyacinthe Maina, incisore nativo di Lubiana che lavorò a Venezia e a Vienna dal 1800 sino al 1815 (Benezit, vol. 7, p. 77). La composizione esalta Napoleone Bonaparte al motto di "Nec plus ultra" alludendo allo stesso tempo sia alla figura mitologica di Ercole, il quale sui monti Calpe ed Abila (meglio conosciuti come le Colonne d'Ercole) scolpì questa frase, sia alla perfezione impersonificata dall'Imperatore. In alto al centro nella corona di alloro, si trova iscritta la parola "Immortalité", e tra ogni foglia della corona stessa viene riportata una delle tante vittoriose battaglie combattute dal 1796 sino al 1809 (Montenotte, Mondovi, Lodi, Castiglione, Bassano, Arcole, Rivoli, Marengo etc ). La decoratività della composizione è esaltata dalla ricca cornice a nastro sulla quale sono iscritti i nomi dei componenti del Conseil d'Etat (sulla sinistra), Senat Conservateur (in alto), Generaux de Division (sulla destra) mentre in basso al centro la dedica ai posteri. Il fine riferimento allegorico attorno al quale è costruita la composizione dell'incisione, l'abile lavoro dell'incisiore e le dimensioni stesse della stampa lasciano supporre che l'opera fosse indirizzata ad un pubblico colto e di rango sociale elevato. Alcuni segni del tempo, rara.
