Typically the essays include an explanation of the geographical origin or derivation of the family's surname sometimes going back as far as the 16th or 17th centuries. Reynolds then traces the family lineage from the earliest known ancestor to the principal subject of each essay. Then he details the subject's biography often with a full page tissue-guarded engraved portrait as well as an enumeration of collateral family lines. The index lists some 3500 decendants of the families covered. Subtitle: A RECORD OF THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF HER PEOPLE IN THE MAKING OF A COMMONWEALTH AND THE BUILDING OF A NATION.
