ill., ril. Siamo nel 1942 quando ha inizio l'Operazione Anton, il cui scopo è l'invasione, da parte delle truppe tedesche e italiane, della Repubblica di Vichy. Negli 11 mesi in cui la IV Armata italiana occupa i territori della Costa Azzurra e a ridosso della Alpi, fino alla linea del fiume Rodano, uomini coraggiosi riescono a creare una via di fuga sicura per gli ebrei. Si tratta di un rete di salvataggio guidata dal banchiere italo-francese Angelo Donati, dal benedettino padre Pierre- Marie Benoît e da Massimo Tosti, capitano dei Carabinieri Reali. Quest'ultimo rischia in prima persona la vita per facilitare il passaggio dei rifugiati che, da tutta la Francia, accorrevano nella zona controllata dal nostro esercito e che per questo venne chiamata "piccola Palestina". Dopo il tragico 8 settembre 1943, Tosti aderisce alla Repubblica di Salò, allo scopo di portare avanti la sua opera di salvataggio degli ebrei e aiuta numerosi partigiani che riescono a sfuggire alla cattura o alla deportazione nei lager nazisti. Nonostante, il suo impegno antifascista, a guerra finita il Capitano Tosti rischiò di essere espulso dall'Arma con l'accusa di collaborazionismo.

Una storia vera emersa da un voluminoso carteggio ritrovato dalla famiglia dopo la morte del Capitano Tosti nel 1976: uomini in divisa che nonostante le leggi razziali e i diktat nazisti difesero gli ebrei nel Sud della Francia occupata dalle nostre truppe. Negli 11 mesi in cui la IV Armata italiana rimase sulla Costa Azzurra e a ridosso della Alpi, fino alla linea del fiume Rodano, si creò una zona in cui gli ebrei trovarono un rifugio sicuro grazie a una rete di salvataggio guidata dal banchiere italo-francese Angelo Donati, dal cappuccino padre Pierre-Marie Benoît e dai nostri Carabinieri reali. Tra questi primeggiò il Capitano Massimo Tosti, che si adoperò, spesso rischiando la vita, nel facilitare il passaggio dei rifugiati che, da tutta la Francia, accorrevano nella zona controllata dal nostro esercito che venne per questo chiamata la "piccola Palestina". L'azione del Capitano Tosti proseguì anche dopo il tragico 8 settembre 1943 nella provincia di Imperia, dove continuò la sua opera di salvataggio degli ebrei che questa volta fuggivano dal Sud della Francia invasa dai tedeschi.
