1858197991858. Women Employment Pamphlet titled "Remarks on Woman's Work in Sanitary Reform" England. No Date believed to be circa 1858 measures 5.25" x 8.5". 20 pages. Pamphlet discusses the role of women in the field of Sanitary Reform in England and offers a rare look at the advancement for women's employment equality documenting the skills they have the contributions they can make and the overall benefit they have on society. The pamphlet begins by describing tough physical conditions and suffering in England asking: "What can woman do in her domestic and social capacities to remedy these evils" It also breaks down the field of sanitary labor. "The great field of sanitary labor may be divided into two pars: the amelioration of injurious external circumstances and the reform of injurious habits and customs. Of these parts the former belongs principally to man the latter principally to woman." The pamphlet identifies the tasks of woman within this role: "It is for woman in her functions of mother housewife and teacher to effect those urgently needed changes in infant management domestic economy education and the general habits of her own sex without which humanity could never attain to its desired state of bodily perfection through all injurious external circumstances were changes. It is for her to teach and apply the laws of health in her own provinces where man cannot act." OCLC Worldcat locates no copies in US Institutions but two copies in Europe at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Aberdeen at the time of this writing. Stephen Samuel Wise is pleased to accept American impresario and lecture agent James B. Pond's invitation to serve on the committee welcoming Maurice Maeterlinck to America. Wise writes "I accept with much pleasure your kind invitation to serve as a member of the Honorary Reception Committee." Signed "Stephen S. Wise". Folded for mailing with a small piece out from the top left corner. Very good. <p>Born in Budapest Stephen Samuel Wise 1874-1949 emigrated to the US when his father accepted service as rabbi of Brooklyn's Congregation Baith Israel Anshei Emes. After completing his studies at Columbia University Wise pursued rabbinical studies under several noted rabbis of the era including Richard J.H. Gottheil Kohut Gersoni Joff and Margolis. He was appointed assistant rabbi of NYC's Congregation B'nai Jeshurun becoming the Congregation's senior rabbi later that year. Taking over as rabbi of Portland Oregon's Congregation Beth Israel he attacked many of the social and political ills facing the country. He soon broke with the traditional reform movement and established his "Free Synagogue" in 1907 launching a movement. Wise was an early supporter of Zionism and laid the groundwork for what became the Zionist Organization of America and served as president of the American Jewish Congress. His good friend Albert Einstein profoundly praised him in a tribute that Einstein presented at the celebration of Wise' 60th birthday. In 1914 Wise co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NAACP. Wise early on saw the threat posed by Hitler's rise in Germany and fought to shape U.S. public opinion against the growing German threat leading efforts for a Jewish Boycott of Germany and the creation of the World Jewish Congress.<p>James B. Pond the American impresario and lecture agent who headed the J.B. Pond Lyceum Bureau brought the great Belgian poet Maurice Maeterlinck to America for a series of lectures. The first lecture took place at Carnegie hall on January 2nd 1920. Unfortunately Maeterlinck failed to carry out his intention to lecture in English because of his labored "phonetic" English. He declared his intention to continue his lectures in French and have the translation read by another person. As a result the lecture tour was a failure and lawsuits ensued on both sides. Published by Wise as third and last volume of his grand project for American-Jewish liturgy titled "Minhag America", this final volume is a collection of liturgical hymns, psalms and prayers in English and German. Singerman 2109.The original two volumes of the Minhag America prayer book had both been published in 1857, one with Hebrew-English text (Prayer Book for Public and Private Worship) and the other with Hebrew-German text (Gebet-Buch fur den offentlichen Gottesdienst und die Privat-Andacht). Wise here indicates that with this third volume includes additional new writings by Wise and others. Text in English and German on facing pages. Also includes detailed service instructions, religious notes, a table of torah readings and a table of contents. Wises Minhag America would become the standard liturgy of American Refom congragations from its original publication until the introduction of the Union Prayer Book in the 1890s. Of the three volumes issued in the 1860s, this Hymnal-Psalter remains the scarcest, far, far less common than the volumes for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kipur, reflecting the centrality in American Reform Judaism of the High Holidays above other forms of daily liturgy. He was also an organizer and mover in the establishment of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, in 1889. Elected its president, he served until he died. Very good. - Over 35 words by the American Congregational minister and prison reform advocate listing his credentials under his signature penned on a 4-1/8 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide sheet of paper. Signed "E.C. Wines" above his credentials "Secretary of the National Prison Association of America and Commissioner of the Government of the United States to arrange the preliminaries of an International Congress on the prevention and repression of crime including penal and reformatory treatment." Once mounted into an album with tape and glue stains on the verso including a spot rubbed raw. There is a tiny tear to the lower portion of the left edge. Very good.</p><p>The American Congregational minister and prison reform advocate Enoch Cobb Wines 1806-1879 served as a pastor in Cornwall Vermont and East Hampton Long Island as well as a professor of languages at Pennsylvania's Washington College. He was appointed secretary of the New York Prison Association in 1862 and subsequently the National Prison Association in 1870. He organized the first international congress on prison discipline held in London in 1871-72.</p> circa [1871-72].
