Geiger (18101874) was a pioneer of the Wissenschaft des Judentums and founder of Reform Judaism . Geiger was born in Frankfurt am Main to an Orthodox family and received a traditional religious education. Already in his childhood, he began studying classical history, which gave rise to doubts concerning biblical claims to divine authority. At the age of 17, Geiger began writing a study of the Mishnah, differentiating its legal style from biblical and talmudic law, and a dictionary of Mishnaic Hebrew. The two journals he edited contain numerous articles of scholarly and theological significance: Wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift fuer juedische Theologie (183539) and Juedische Zeitschrift fuer Wissenschaft und Leben (186275) (Heschel in EJ 2007) . Sir Henry Clinton, the younger (1771-1829), was the second son of Sir Henry Clinton the elder and victor of Charleston. Beginning his career as ensign in 1787 he served in Holland from 1788-89 and was gazetted captain in 1791. He was appointed aide-de-camp to the Duke of York in 1793 and promoted lieutenant-colonel in 1795. A distinguished career followed: as adjutant-general in India, 1802-5; military attaché with the Russian Army at Austerlitz, 1805; commandant at Syracuse, 1806-7; MP, 1808-18; adjutant-general in Sir John Moore's campaign, 1808-9; major-general, 1810, commanded sixth division in Peninsular, 1811-14; KB, 1813; lieutenant-general, 1814; at Waterloo, 1815. A SPLENDID ASSOCIATION COPY OF A SCARCE WORK OF CONSIDERABLE NAPOLEONIC INTEREST. Apparently not in BLPC; not recorded by Sandler.

The Editors note, Isaac Beshevis Singer visited the Cincinnati campus for a week of lectures and dialogue with the teachers and future rabbis of a movement which does not actually forsake Jewishness but has taken out of Jewishness its very essence. Interestingly, Lawrence Kushner, then a rabbinic student, is listed on the masthead of this issue for Photography and New York representative. The Variant ran a total of 8 volumes, 1961-1969, generally appearing 3 times per year. Issued by the student body of the Hebrew Union College, Jewish Institute of Religion.
