He had a long political career serving as a Conservative MP from 1864 until 1906 twice serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer and briefly as Leader of the Opposition in 1886. . 1834204419London: Frederick Westley and A.H.Davis 1834. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. Book condition: fair 1834. very scarce in this format. Gibbon's seminal work is printed from the edition in 12 volumes includes a 13 page introductory memoir of the author by William Youngman b/w frontis of Gibbon no tissue gaurd. The book begins with the extent and military force of the empire in the age of the Antonines and continues through to chapter 71 in which Gibbons discusses the prospect of the ruins of Rome in the 15th century with a conclusion of the whole work. Half bound in leather and marbled paper the boards are worn on all edges corners scuffed small losses to the marbled paper from both front and rear - see photos. The leather spine is in nice condition soft tan leater with intricate gilt decoration 5 raised bands gilt lettered maroon title label - all very bright. Endpapers are marbled in similar pattern to boards as are all three edges upper edge dulled others bright. Both hinges cracked with front one separating. Front pastedown has a decorative coat of arms bookplate RFEP has small area of loss to lower corner light foxing to end papers and prelims but no foxing throughout. Evidence of historical damp staining on a few pages. Binding is very tight interior very clean 1303 pages with index 7 X 10 inches. Inscribed by Abbott in brown ink to first blank foxed esp. list of subscribers else clean and tight. Good A well-handled subscriber's copy of Thomas Eastoe Abbott's 1828 poem in memory of Prince Frederick Duke of York and Albany who had died in 1827 inscribed in the year of publication to "Sarah Coulson with the Author's affectionate regard—Bridlington 6 Augt 1828". Abbott's list of subscribers features a Robert Coulson Esq. Collector of Excise Newcastle-upon-Tyne who took four copies likely gifting this one to his relation wife or daughter Sarah who was evidently a close enough acquaintance of the author to merit the fond inscription. Thomas Eastoe Abbott 1786–1854 was an English poet and excise officer hence the connection with Coulson whose poems were described by the Darlington antiquarian and great-grandson of Elizabeth Gaunt daughter of the poet John Dyer William Hylton Dyer Longstaffe as "written with great simplicity of language full of genuine patriotism and Christianity; some of them much resembling in style that of Wordsworth". Part I is the House edition Part II the Senate; the third volume is Part I of the Maps. 8vos in the publisher's brown blind-tooled cloth titles in gilt on Part II and the Maps. All 16 plates present in Part I all 36 in Part II but lacking the two maps all three as called for in the maps volume. Corners rubbed through shallow chipping at the spine ends a couple of hinges starting. Moderate foxing throughout Part I; Part II is more heavily toned and foxed. The mid-sized map has small separations at every fold intersection. The large map has some small separations but has one large hole at a fold intersection. Edward Gibbon Wakefield 1796-1862 is considered a key figure in the establishment of the colonies of South Australia and New Zealand where he later served as a member of parliament. He was best known for his colonisation scheme sometimes referred to as the Wakefield scheme which aimed to populate the new colony South Australia with a workable combination of labourers tradespeople artisans and capital. New England bookseller Spofford 1825-1908 joined the Library of Congress in 1861 and in 1864 Lincoln appointed him chief librarian -- a position he held until 1897 during which time he modernized that venerable institution.
