Editor John Baker-Holroyd 1st Earl of Sheffield 1735-1821 Gibbon's close friend and literary executor remarks in the preface: "Few men have ever so fully unveiled their own character by a minute narrative of their sentiments and pursuits with a genuine confession of his little foibles and peculiarities and a good-humoured and natural display of his own conduct and opinions." These memoirs are most interesting for Gibbon's reflections on the development of his 'History' which sparked so much outrage from the public and the Church relative to its historical treatment of Christianity. They are also rich in commentary about his contemporaries and the political regimes in England and Revolutionary France. The two volumes are the first editions; a third volume was published separately in 1815 by John Murray. London. Printed for A. Strahan, and T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies (Successors to Mr. Cadell) in the Strand. 1796 unknown

I bookbinder's tickets to pastedowns a little toned; contemporary pebble-grain green morocco prize-binding by J. Low for The Law Society gilt arms to upper-covers gilt spines all edges gilt
An excellent example of Gibbon's celebrated history in a green morocco prize-binding by J. Low for The Law Society.

A monumental work spanning nearly 1500 years of history which has remained controversial since its first appearance. Gibbon argued that Rome's fall was the 'natural and inevitable effect of immoderate greatness. Prosperity ripened the principle of decay; the causes of destruction multiplied with the extent of conquest; and as soon as time or accident had removed the artificial supports the stupendous fabric yielded to the pressure of its own weight' c.38 p.523. As a result this hollow empire succumbed easily to the twin forces of barbarianism and Christianity which had been gaining momentum over the course of the fourth century AD.

Although attacked for his perceived irreligion Gibbon's work received many positive reviews and has since become a cornerstone text in the study of Western history. Writing to Gibbon in December 1788 his friend Adam Smith noted that 'by the universal assent of every man of taste and learning. Decline and Fall sets you at the very head of the whole literary tribe at present existing in Europe' ODNB.

Illustrated with three folding engraved maps showing the extent of the Roman Empire.
London, Ward, Lock and CO., [c.1900]. unknown

First edition in English of Gibbon's first published work 12mo pp. 8 168 including ads; contemporary full speckled calf ruled in gilt leather spine label lettered in gilt previous owner's name written neatly in ink on title else a very good copy. In 1753 Gibbon a young man of twenty-five was sent by his father to Lausanne to study with the Calvinist minister Pavillard and did not return until 1758. By this time he had already begun his Essai sur l'Etude de la Litterature which he finished in England in 1759 where it was published on the urging of his father in 1761. Published in French the work found little audience in England but succeeded apparently abroad and it was reprinted in both Paris and Geneva in 1762. After its publication in English in 1764 it became highly sought after but Gibbon refused to republish it himself. Only one other contemporary edition appeared in 1788 in Dublin which was pirated. Contains a touching 5-page dedication to his father.
