Damp staining to inner margin of first and last few pages in most volumes. Heavy staining to margins of Volume IV. A few volumes have water splashes to page edges a couple have slight insect damage to page edges. Cracking to some of the joints but apart from Volume I all books remain securely bound. Light foxing to the text. Engraved portrait frontis to Volume I with light staining. Two fold-out maps in Volume I with tears and marking. Old paper repair to reverse of the first map has caused some staining. One fold-out map in Volume II in very good condition. Bound in contemporary full calf later rebacked with elaborately gilt spines in compartments between raised bands gilt-lettered morocco labels marbled endpapers and edges. Moderate wear to boards several corners repaired preliminaries a little foxed occasional light marginal foxing throughout but overall a nice clean set in handsomely restored bindings. Gibbon's Memoirs and Miscellaneous Works were first published in 1796 just two years after his death by his friend and literary executor Lord Sheffield. The Memoirs were compiled by Sheffield from six different incomplete manuscripts left among Gibbon's papers after his death. Originally published in a two-volume quarto edition a new and enlarged edition the present was issued in 1814 in five octavo volumes bringing to light a substantial quantity of new material gleaned from his Journal Letters and other miscellaneous papers.
