Vol.2 has similar Cooter sig. & stamp top fr. blank fly-leaf top corner water-stained from this through to verso t.p.not affecting f/piece image both gutter cracking covers again clean but corners rubbed and sp.ends rubbed & chipped with some loss at bottom and a sm. hole towards lower end. Light brown cloth covers have only a few surface marks and fairly minor rubbing to extremeties & joints the outer edge of fr.board to Vol.2 has a thin sl.darker strip & there is a sm.cloth nick towards top back outer corner of this vol. Despite the faults which sound worse for being described at length this remains an above average copy of this interesting and scarce biography. It passed from the British Phrenological Society to R.M.Young when the society was dissolved. <br/> <br/> Macmillan hardcover

Vol.2 internally clean and unmarkedbut lacking rear endpaper and pastedown graphite offset to blank verso last list page end-gutters cracking a little worse than Vol.1 covers cleaner than Vol.1 but rectangular patch of pigment loss top fr. main problem however is loss of 1 cm. top sp. cloth split to joint beside this extending 6 ms & crease across flapping top part of cloth will fix this when sold further short split lower down all other extremities rubbed. 65806Printed at Leominster Massachusetts by Salmon Wilder for John Whiting of Lancaster 1805. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. 12mo. 14.5 x 8.5 cm. pp.171. Contemporary sheep spine with four gilt rules. Old ownership inscription of 'G Freeman' to front free endpaper; embossed stamp of 'F.M. O'Brien Bookseller New and Antiquarian Portland Maine' to final blank. Some light spotting and browning throughout title-page with small tear to bottom margin and small perforation just under the name 'Mahomet' marginal loss affecting text to first page generally a very good unsophisticated copy. 'The Life of Mahomet' was extracted from Gibbon's best known work 'The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire' to be published separately. At the time of publication printed works relating to Islam were rare as its few practitioners in the United States had arrived as part of the slave trade and the practicing of Islam was forbidden on plantations with nearly all slaves forced to convert to Christianity upon their arrival. Wilder 1780-1832 was a minor printer in central Massachusetts and later New Hampshire. The John Whiting 1760-1810 for whom the work was printed was likely the Revolutionary War soldier and lieutenant colonel in the 4th U.S. Infantry.
