8vo., Second Impression, on laid paper, with portrait frontispiece, 10 plates (one double-page) and three full-page facsimiles of titles in the text; original series binding of grey boards, holland back lettered in black, UNCUT AND LARGELY UNOPENED, a remarkably bright, clean copy in plain, unclipped dustwrapper (dustwrapper not shown in image). This classic study was first published by Jonathan Cape in 1940, but Keynes recounts in his memoirs '...publication in 1940...very few copies were sold. A few months later most of the stock was destroyed by German bombs...fewer than 100 sets of sheets of the book had been salvaged. These I offered to the Bibliographical Society for sale to its members, and they were soon taken up, while Cape's volume became much sought after...This volume is therefore the second issue of the first edition'. Keynes, 'The Gates of Memory' (1981), pp. 246-251.
1940WRCLIT79066London: Jonathan Cape 1940. 288pp. Large octavo. Gilt polished black buckram untrimmed. Portrait. Plates. Slight tanning to edges and endsheets but a near fine copy in good somewhat darkened and soiled dust jacket. First edition the uncommon first issue. Keynes notes in his autobiography that the first printing sold poorly due to the war and a significant portion of the edition was destroyed in the blitz. Rupert Hard-Davis wrote in THE BOOK COLLECTOR that "Gibbon's Library was duly brought out in one of the worst months in publishing history - April 1940. It achieved the splendid record of selling fewer copies than any other book ever published by Cape - under a hundred I remember - and since most of the unsold stock was soon destroyed by enemy action the book must be the rarest in all Geoffrey's extensive oeuvre." In 1950 the Bibliographical Society bound up some sets of rescued sheets with a missing signature reprinted constituting the second issue. Jonathan Cape hardcover books

188216369Gebbie & Co. Good. 1882. Hardcover. Complete 8-Volume Set. On some of the eight books bindings have some weakness but the only splits are in Volumes III and V and they're just starting. Pages are unmarked except for a couple of checkmarks on the table of contents and pages are slightly tanned. No foxing but flyleaf has small chip on two volumes. Gilt on all three edges -- still nice. Covers have some wear at edges -- almost all at corners and spine tips with boards showing slightly at most corners.
