"This is an account of the excavation of a Greek sanctuary in the south-west corner of the mainland of Asia Minor opposite Rhodes--once known as the Carian Chersonese. The excavations took place in 1959-1960. This is the first Greek temple of any size uncovered in that part of Asia Minor and the discovery of the site of Kastabos whose existence was known from book V of Diodorus' world history has entailed the re-siting of several ancient towns in the region. The sanctuary itself whose main buildings date from c. 300 B. C. was dedicated to the Goddess Hemithea. It adds to our knowledge of a special sort of Greek shrine which was popular in the early Hellenistic age and is a perfect instance of a religious gathering place designed for a short well attended festival. The excavations show that although it was an Ionic temple the style of the great contemporary temples in Ionia such as that at Ephesus has been modified and the design is somewhat similar in plan and proportion to that of the temple of Epidaurus. In particular the discovery of a decorative screen with little shrines round the temple area throws new light on Greek architectural complexes."; 180 pages . Cambridge University Press hardcover

Oversized.; This richly illustrated volume discusses the histories of the port city of Butrint and its intimate connection to the wider conditions of the Adriatic. In so doing it is a reading and re-reading of the site that adds significantly to the study of Mediterranean urban history over the longue durée . Firstly the book proposes a new paradigm for the development-history of Butrint - based on discussions of the latest archaeological historical and landscape studies from approximately 20 new excavations and surveys together covering a temporal arch from prehistory to the early modern period. Secondly it examines how the perception of the city influenced the archaeological methodology of 20th-century studies of the site where iteration and reversal were often being applied in equal measure. In this it asks important questions on the management of heritage sites and the contemporary role of archaeological practise.; Butrint Archaeological Monographs; 250 pages; Overseas Shipping Extra. . 1842174622 . 197743574Oxford University Press. 1977. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Pages a bit browned. Minor bumping to a couple of corners. DJ has minor edgewear and a bit of chipping.; Ostia an ancient town on the coast facing the Tyrrhenian Sea in Latium Italy was the harbour of ancient Rome and perhaps its first colonia. Located at the mouth of the River Tiber Ostia was said to have been founded by Ancus Marcius one of the kings of Rome in the 7th century BC. However the most ancient archaeological remains so far discovered are no earlier than the 4th century BC and the most ancient buildings currently visible are from the 3rd century BC notably the Castrum military camp and of a slightly later date the Capitolium temple of Jupiter Juno and Minerva. The opus quadratum walls of the original castrum at Ostia provide important evidence for the building techniques that were employed in Roman urbanism during the period of the Middle Republic. Although Ostia was probably founded for the sole purpose of military defence — since through the Tiber's mouths armies could eventually reach Rome by water — in time the port became a commercial harbour and a very important one too. Many of the goods that Rome received from its colonies and provinces passed through Ostia. In this role Ostia soon replaced Pozzuoli.; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 722 pages . 0198148100 . Dustjacket is protected in mylar.; Includes cd-rom; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 316 pages; While the sculpted Ionic frieze of the Parthenon with its galloping horsemen and classically portrayed gods is reproduced in every art history text and has been much studied by scholars no single book has yet been devoted to all its myriad aspects. This study by classical archaeologist and art historian Jenifer Neils breaks new ground by considering all aspects of this complex and controversial monument. Although the frieze has been studied for over two hundred years most scholarship has sought an overall interpretation of the iconography rather than focusing on the sculpture's visual language essential for a full understanding of the narrative. Neils' study not only decodes the language of the frieze but also analyzes its conception and design style and content as well as its impact on later art. Unusual for its wide-ranging approach to the frieze this book also brings ethical reasoning to bear on the issue of its possible repatriation as part of the on-going Elgin Marble debate. As one of the foremost examples of the high classical style and the finest expression of mid-fifth century Athenian ideology the Parthenon frieze is without doubt one of the major monuments of western civilization and as such deserves to be understood in all its dimensions. The accompanying CD-ROM contains a virtual reality Macromedia Director movie of the complete frieze based on the plaster casts in the Skulpturhalle in Basel Switzerland. Developed by Rachel Rosenzweig of the Department of Greek and Roman Art of the Cleveland Museum of Art the casts are arranged in conformity with Neils' reconstruction and enable the user to view them in succession as if walking around the Parthenon. The CD-ROM requires a computer running either MAC OS 8.01 or later or Windows 95 or later. . 0521641616 . Cambridge University Press hardcover
