201535310Oxbow Books. 2015. Hardcover. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Slight waviness to endpapers.; This is an exciting time to study in Athens. The “rescue” excavations of recent years conducted during construction of the Metro system and in preparation for the 2004 Olympic Games combined with major restoration projects and a new enthusiasm for fresh examination of old material using new techniques and applications brings new perspectives and answers on many aspects of the ancient city of Athens and life politics and religion in Attica. The 15 papers presented here contribute new findings that result from intensive first-hand examinations of the archaeological and epigraphical evidence. They illustrate how much may be gained by re-examining material from older excavations and from the methodological shift from documenting information to closer analysis and larger historical reflection. They offer a variety of perspectives on a range of issues: the ambience of the ancient city for passers-by filled with roadside shrines; techniques of architectural construction and sculpting; religious expression in Athens including cults of Asklepios and Serapis; the precise procedures for Greek sacrifice; how the borders of Attica were defined over time and details of its road-system. In presenting this volume the contributors are continuing in a long tradition of autopsy – in the sense of 'personal observation' – in Athens that began even in the Hellenistic period and has continued through the writings of centuries of travellers and academics to the present day.; 11.3 X 8.8 X 0.7 inches; 224 pages . 1782978569 . 200143615Cambridge University Press. 2001. Hardcover. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Includes cd-rom; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 316 pages; While the sculpted Ionic frieze of the Parthenon with its galloping horsemen and classically portrayed gods is reproduced in every art history text and has been much studied by scholars no single book has yet been devoted to all its myriad aspects. This study by classical archaeologist and art historian Jenifer Neils breaks new ground by considering all aspects of this complex and controversial monument. Although the frieze has been studied for over two hundred years most scholarship has sought an overall interpretation of the iconography rather than focusing on the sculpture's visual language essential for a full understanding of the narrative. Neils' study not only decodes the language of the frieze but also analyzes its conception and design style and content as well as its impact on later art. Unusual for its wide-ranging approach to the frieze this book also brings ethical reasoning to bear on the issue of its possible repatriation as part of the on-going Elgin Marble debate. As one of the foremost examples of the high classical style and the finest expression of mid-fifth century Athenian ideology the Parthenon frieze is without doubt one of the major monuments of western civilization and as such deserves to be understood in all its dimensions. The accompanying CD-ROM contains a virtual reality Macromedia Director movie of the complete frieze based on the plaster casts in the Skulpturhalle in Basel Switzerland. Developed by Rachel Rosenzweig of the Department of Greek and Roman Art of the Cleveland Museum of Art the casts are arranged in conformity with Neils' reconstruction and enable the user to view them in succession as if walking around the Parthenon. The CD-ROM requires a computer running either MAC OS 8.01 or later or Windows 95 or later. . 0521641616 . Cambridge University Press hardcover
201033988Cambridge University Press. 2010. Softcover. Very Good. Very minor creasing to lower rear corner of wraps and last few pages.; This volume offers an overview of the Parthenon from antiquity to the modern era. Recent discoveries such as the marble sculpture fragments found during the current restoration work on the Acropolis or a vase excavated in Northern Greece whose decoration echoes a lost pedimental composition have forced scholars to reconsider many aspects of one of the most important monuments of classical antiquity. Bringing together essays on various aspects of this world-renowned temple this book examines the dramatic setting of the temple and its impact on modern architects such as Le Corbusier; new reconstructions and interpretations of Pheidias' vast sculptural program; in-depth analysis of architectural refinements; the techniques employed in making the colossal gold-and-ivory cult statue; and a consideration of the Christian and Muslim phases of the Parthenon's history. Collectively they enhance our understanding of one of the icons of Western art.; 9.6 X 6.7 X 0.9 inches; 446 pages . 0521164826 . Cambridge University Press paperback

200935075Archaeopress Access Archaeology. 2009. Softcover. Near Fine. Very faint shelfwear.; In this account Alexandra Richardson reveals as she says in her introduction her quest to get to know a ‘remarkable man who wholly dedicated his later life and finances to restoring and excavating what is surely one of the finest classical Greek sites in the Western Mediterranean. I rapidly began to be drawn in to the sketchy sometimes speculative details surrounding the remarkable Captain Hardcastle…I thought back to his unlit villa beside the theatrically shining temples and the more I got to know the man the more it seemed entirely in keeping with his personality that his former home should still be not be sharing the spotlight with the great monuments he was so intimately involved with. He remained a mysterious and private person who kept his own counsel throughout life. I was to discover that he wrote very few letters home to his family from the Far East South Africa Italy. And when he did write to the chosen few I had to learn to read between the lines. Luckily his own family wrote to one another making mention of him…With so little to go on it was just the sort of challenge that a researcher relishes. The Anglo-Italian theme was yet another appeal my instinctive habitat. No full-scale biography had ever been written about him and thus I was not stepping on any toes. I had the field all to myself piecing together a profile from many sources set largely in a period of modern Sicilian history the 1920s and early ‘30s rarely “popularised” by foreign writers. That was all how the four-year journey began.’ 'This book is the labour of years of research and scholarship. In Alexandra Richardson's book the personality of Alexander Hardcastle comes to life in all its many facets. Her detailed account of the history of Agrigento is historically correct and written in a fluid style. Her descriptions of Sicily are accurate and lyrical her cameos of Sicilians witty and a pleasure to read. Richardson's rigorous research describes his painful and determined iter from London to Girgenti his stubborness and his resilience.' - Simonetta Agnello Hornby 'The Almond Picker'; Archaeological Lives; 9.5 X 6.6 X 0.3 inches; 143 pages . 1905739281 .
