It has been noted that practically the entire FIRST EDITION of this work had the Plate Volume bound with only the autographic plates of transcription made by Fairman without the photographic plates of the papyrus itself. Although Gardiner mentions that at the eve of going to the printer "the collotype plates have been ready for more than twenty years" there seem to be the issue of Gardiner's impatience and matters of speed of process and expense: "The thought of the expense of such a publication alike to author and purchaser has been the source of much vacillation." Preface. It is therefoe that finally the option of only autographic reproduction was chosen for the main edition and a "deluxe" edition one described as "With Extra Plates" was printed in an exceptionally small run. For that matter see also Annual Egyptological Bibliography 107 which specifies the publication of two versions of this work with different prices. While Fairman's transcriptions are reproduced here lithographically the original 13 collotypes provide a rare unparalleled exquisite view of the papyrus. He began work as unpaid assistant custodian of the collection of parasitic worms of Karl Franz Anton von Schreibers at the Vienna Museum of Natural History. Bound in 19th century marbled boards rubbed. Re-backed in black morocco with older gilt lettered spine laid on. Bookplate depicting a baron's crown on inside front cover. Sticker removed from front end paper. Booklet is trimmed on the bottom obscuring the lower printed border line on the title page but not affecting any text. Plenty of space remains in the margins of the text pages. 40 sheets of 19th century blank paper are bound in the rear. Top edge gilt. The author is actually Henry Keepe writing under the pseudonym of Charles Taylour. His booklet addressed to King James II describes how he Keepe salvaged the crucifix and gold chain of Edward the Confessor from a damaged tomb at Westminster and how he later presented this treasure to the newly crowned king. The author claims that his discovery of the artifact on June 11 1685 was a "forerunner of the Good News" that James had defeated his enemies presumably the Duke of Monmouth. Keepe then relates three previous occasions when King Edward's body was disinterred. On each occasion the corpse was supposedly found in a miraculously uncorrupted state. These stories stand in some contrast to the author's own experience. Although Keepe stresses that the tomb's artifacts including the gold chain and crucifix correspond to historical accounts he also reveals perhaps inadvertently that the Confessor's body was nothing but bones. Unusual and scarce piece. ESTC locates only 7 copies in the U.S. OCLC lists 5 locations. Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. Coloured collotypes the size of the plates here image size up to ca. 50x110 cm are very rare indeed in book production so much so in such superb quality. Published posthumously. The first four volumes Spruch 213-506 were published a year after Sethe's death. Sethe's original manuscript was transferred to print by an old now defunct method called "Manuldruck" also known as "Reflex Copying Process". The four volumes were printed by the inventor of this method the printers' firm Max Ullman of Zwicaku. In 1962 appeared by Augustin Volume V Spruch 507-582 to be followed the same year by Volume VI Index. Also these two volumes are presented here in the FIRST EDITION to be distinguished from the second edition of the entire work which also appeared that year. HARDCOVER nicely bound in navy blue full cloth; very few underlines in red pencil. In mint condition. ~ Extremely rare original manuscript by the renowned Egyptologist Jaroslav Cerny 1898-1970. Comprising essentially of 3 parts the manuscript was edited by Herbert Walter Fairman 1907-1982 and copied in 1952 by Constant de Wit 1907-1989. In her memorial volume to Cerny Rome BIP 1975 Sarah Israelit Groll says that the first section paragraphs 1-145 Prepositions nouns and verbs was first copied by Caminos in 1950 for Gardiner and is now in the Griffith Institute. As far as we are aware no comparison has ever been made between the two versions. The present manuscript is a direct carbon copy of the typed manuscript. The hieroglyphic text is handwritten in pencil directly on the paper apparently by De Wit. The second section which is typed here as integral continuation of the first has entries on Negation Prothetic aleph in L. E. Periphrasis with "iri" Relative Clauses Relatives Participles Non-Verbal Sentences Participles. It is assumed that this section was not included in Caminos' copy of 1950 and appears here for the first time. The last section titled "Additional Series of Notes" Pp. xxxix is reproduced on photocopier.
