Undated but circa 1983. American stage and film director Minnelli 1903-86 began as a costume and set designer as his semi-erotic drawings for this volume clearly show. A lovely and unusual copy. Two volumes complete rebound in full red leather with a unique design: the front has the form of a naked lady reclining in gilt outline and the rear board is the gilt outline of a pair of buttocks. Housed in a thick card slipcase with central division. Fore edge untrimmed. Silk endpapers. Each book is 27 × 20.5cm the slipcase is 28 × 20.5 × 9cm. 346pp & 337pp. French text. From the library of noted collector Gordon R Smith with two different Ex Libris bookplates by David Bekker one to each volume. Volume one's bookplate is full page shows naked ladies with cats signed lower right and numbered lower left 36/60 whilst volume two is smaller and shows three dancing ladies again signed and numbered. The bookplates are printed in colour. The memoirs of Casanova the eighteenth century Venetian gambler eroticist and spy. The volumes cover the years 1734 to 1755 & 1755 to 1772. This set illustrated with 32 full page colour plates with tissue guards and 79 smaller illustrations within the text fleurons and tailpieces by Umberto Brunelleschi printed on velin de Condat paper. Condition: A very good set. There is a hint of fading and a little marking to the spine and the slipcase has a bump to the lower rear right corner. 17775251Paris: Castrique 1777. A nice original copy of this antique engraving showing the death of Chevalier D'Assas. Designed by Casanova and engraved by Pierre Laurent. This scarce if rather sombre illustration appeared in two formats. We believe this to be the original format with a later edition dedicated to the King with different text below the engraved image is identical. 36.5cm x 45.5cm tipped onto a slightly larger backing paper. The engraving itself is in good condition. There is a light fold to the centre of the sheet and a small closed tear to the top 2cm of the engraving. Pin holes to the bottom right corner. Overall in clean condition front and verso. The backing sheet is a little tatty to the edges. It is only tipped on by the top edge and could be trimmed or removed. The Battle of Clostercamp Kloster Kampen was a French victory over an Anglo-German army during the Seven Years' War. . Bel exemplaire original de cette gravure ancienne représentant la mort du Chevalier D'Assas. Dessinée par Casanova et gravée par Pierre Laurent. Cette illustration rare quoique plutôt sombre a été publiée en deux formats. Nous pensons qu'il s'agit du format original avec une édition ultérieure dédiée au Roi avec un texte différent en dessous l'image gravée est identique. 365 cm x 455 cm collé sur un support légèrement plus grand. La gravure elle-même est en bon état. Il y a un léger pli au centre de la feuille et une petite déchirure fermée sur les 2 cm supérieurs de la gravure. Des trous d'épingle sont présents dans le coin inférieur droit. Dans l'ensemble le recto et le verso sont en bon état. La feuille de support est un peu abîmée sur les bords. Il n'est fixé que par le bord supérieur et pourrait être coupé ou enlevé. La bataille de Clostercamp Kloster Kampen est une victoire française sur une armée anglo-allemande pendant la guerre de Sept Ans. Castrique unknown

Italian artist Brunelleschi moved to fin-de-siècle Paris where he worked as an artist illustrator and fashion designer. He designed sets and costumes for Folies Bergère in the 1920s including for Josephine Baker and for the Scala in Milan and the Roxy Theater in New York; according to Jane Merrill "his style was opulent yet humorous and light" 152. Among his known specialties was 18th-century Venetian styles and "refined coloring" both on their best display in this work. 2 volumes 10.5'' x 8'' each.
