1871FGN24-C-2Bruxelles: J Rozez 1871. Leather. Good. 7.5" by 5". None. The intriguing memoirs of Italian adventurer and author Giacomo Girolamo Casanova the original French edition complete in eight volumes. The intriguing memoirs of Italian adventurer and author Giacomo Girolamo Casanova. No collation available though appears complete in six volumes. In original French. Casanova's autobiography is considered one of the most authentic sources of the customs and norms of European social life during the 18th Century. He signed his works as Jacques Casanova De Seingalt upon his exile from Venice and when he began writing in French. His fame lies mostly in his complicated and elaborate affairs with women and his name has become synonymous with 'womanizer'. He associated with many distinguished figures such as royalty popes cardinals as well as Voltaire Goethe and Mozart. Casanova wrote his memoirs during the last years of his life as a result of his isolation and boredom due to his exile. He wrote that his memoirs were 'the only remedy' to keeping him sane. After years of work Casanova almost did not publish his memoir as he feared it would make him enemies from writing the truth about his affairs. He then chose to proceed by writing initials instead of actual names. The decision to write the memoirs in French rather than his native tongue of Italian was due to the fact French was more widely spoken at that time. In half calf bindings. Externally smart with some rubbing to boards and extremities. Light rubbing to spines particularly to the head and tail. Front joint to volume I weak. Front hinge to volume I slightly strained but firm. The front hinge to volume V is slightly strained but firm. Internally volumes I II III and V are generally firmly bound though strained in places. Volumes IV and VI are firmly bound. Spotting to the first and last few pages of each volume otherwise generally clean throughout. Amateur repair to last few pages of volumes III and V due to worm damage. Affects text to a minor extent. Good J Rozez hardcover
