2004141957Stevens Point WI: The Arcadian Press 2004. Three individual books of handmade paper housed in a clamshell cloth covered box. Arcadian Press. 4to. Three individual books of handmade paper housed in a clamshell cloth covered box. unpaginated. Privately printed artist book limited to 50 numbered copies. All three volumes are fine in a fine clamshell box.<BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> This powerful exquisitely rendered 3-volume collaboration between Caren Heft of Arcadian Press and Jeffrey Morin of sailorBOYpress is done in the spirit of the ars moriendi the art of dying 15th-century Christian texts with instructions about how to die well developed perhaps in response to the Black Plague. Heft and Morin use the format ironically to look contemporary scourges: suicide bombers the destructive effect of mercury in the environment AIDS. The woodcuts from the Middle Age-originals are replaced by an assemblage of tape pins stitchery beads and pieces of metal. The effect is powerful even overwhelming.<BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> Papers: Root River Mill cotton Larroque and Hahnemuhle. The Hahnemuhle gelatin sized with pigment added-in. Typeface throughout: Cochin Light. <BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> From the colophons of the 3 volumes<BR> <br /> Martyr: "As a contemporary ars moriendi this book deals with death specifically the first Palestinian female bomber Wafa Idris. It is an attempt to understand why a young woman would strap a belt bomb over her womb and set if off in a public place where victims could be children elderly or pregnant women. Yasser Arafat who exhorted women to die for the liberation of Palestine died during the printing of this book.<BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> "Suicide bombers are currently the weapon of choice for terrorist organizations. They are low-cost use unsophisticated technology are readily available require little training and strike fear into the hearts of the population. Women have an added advantage as in the Muslim world they are searched gingerly. World-wide women are perceived as non-violent adding an element of surprise. Suicide bombers attain extensive media coverage for their organizations as casualties are often high. Media coverage is a good recruitment tool and furthers political agenda."<BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> Mercury: "What child does not remember finding some excuse to play with mercury in a science class That same child probably has some memory related to fishing. We all share the image that opened the Andy Griffith Show where father and son walk a country road on the way to their favorite fishing hole. Did anyone expect that todays childhood memories would intertwine mercury and fishing in such a dangerous way In most counties in Wisconsin the Department of Natural Resources limits the consumption of fish as well as the daily catch limit."<BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> Rooster: "In fifteenth century Europe the level of literacy had been on the decline. Ars Moriendi were picture manuals for ones preparation to meet death. On one level they were intended to ease the transition and prepare ones family for the coming loss. On another level these manuals were a form of propaganda advising the soon-to-be-departed to give heavily to the Church to guarantee a better place in Heaven or at least a seat further from the flames of Hell.<BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> "This book is one of three that deal with modern forms of death that visit a population. In this case it is the presence of AIDS in Africa and how a culture responds to and interprets the mortal threat. Sibongiles story comes from 'Child rape: A taboo within the AIDS taboo; More and more girls are being raped by men who believe this will "cleanse" them of the disease but people don't want to confront the issue" Sunday Times South Africa April 4 1999 by Prega Govender. It is combined with the story of Gumha and the Large Rooster as told by the Sukuma Research Committee. The two unrelated stories have been blended together to create a modern narrative that sets the stage for confronting death. The Arcadian Press unknown

Near Fine. 12mo. 10 1-51 9 pp. Full contemoprary red morocco with gold borders on each board spine with gold tooling gold-tooled borders around the red-silk doublures; top edge gilt. Red silk floral endpapers. Bound by the well-known French artisan and bookbinder Leon Gruel. With a light blue silk ribbon bookmark bound in. Vignette title page in color along with a frontispiece and eleven plates and numerous decorations all by the author. This is the publisher's presentation issue on vellum signed by publisher and bookseller Leon Conquet with his indication that this copy is for Monsieur Legrand. This almost certainly was the well-known French illustrator Louis Legrand. Legrand moved to Paris in 1884 and began studying printmaking with the Belgian artist Felicien Rops who was under exclusive contract to Conquet from 1883 to 1885. Conquet's bookshop in Paris was a kind of salon for Parisian bibliophiles and illustrators and Conquet Rops Morin and Legrand would have been well-acquainted by the time of this book's publication in 1891. Although there are no other ownership markings the foregoing and Conquet's eschewal of using initials or a first name to identify the intended recipient suggests that there was only one person named Legrand who could be the intended recipient of a presentation copy of this book Louis Legrand himself See W. Z. Silverman The New Bibliopolis for illuminating discussion of each of these individuals and the Parisian book world during this era. A beautiful copy of this wonderful confluence of associations in the world of late nineteenth-century French book arts and illustration. A Near Fine book with offsetting from the bound in bookmark on pages 22 - 23 where it presumably laid for many years and a faint dampspot on the endpapers. Librairie L. Conquet hardcover

191441582Massachusetts: n.p. 1914. Very good plus. Hand-accented gift scrapbook of religious iconography created and presented by Julia Morin to her brother Reverend William Morin upon the occasion of his ordination. Populated with reproductions of the masterworks of Christian art by Bellini Gaddi Titian Correggio Raphael Del Sarto Renni Rubens Rembrandt Hoffman among others each page is carefully engrossed with exquisite titles and borders. Plates likely clipped from THE PERRY MAGAZINE FOR SCHOOL AND HOME a Boston-based periodical of the era which reproduced fine works of art for use in education. Several instances of hand-colored covering-over an otherwise nude baby Jesus add a note of reverential modesty. Julia's inscription to the cover identifies her as a 1914 graduate of St. Ann's Convent presumably of Readville MA. Historical references cite William as having ministered to congregations near Boston Fitchburg and North Adams. A touching and lovingly-assembled folk book. Commercial string-tied album. Cloth covered limp card boards. Gilt lettering to front. 50 leaves holding a single portrait photograph and 194 clipped artwork reproductions within hand-cut corner mounts at rectos and versos. Morin went on to practise law and journalism and entered politics in 1830 becoming a supporter of Louis Joseph Papineau. He was the author in 1834 of the Ninety-Two Resolutions and the same year was deputed with Denis Benjamin Viger to lay before the British parliament the views of the Lower Canadian Assembly.
