Francisco de Goya (1746-1828), known as one of the most unique artists of European painting and a pioneer of modern painting, was introduced to the Turkish audience for the first time with four series of engravings, along with a selection of oil paintings, at the Pera Museum in 2012. Curated by Marisa Oropesa, the exhibition consisted of works from Spain and Italy's leading museums and private collections. As one of the best narrators of darkness, the exhibition united Goya's various oil paintings and engraving series-Caprichos, Disasters of War, Tauromaquia, Proverbs or Follies- that bear witness to a turbulent period in Spain and Europe. The works in the catalogue, besides his career as a court painter and portraitist, explore Goya's extraordinary imagination, along with his reflections of the social circumstances of the era, from a critical perspective. The catalogue seeks to shed light upon Goya's extraordinary imagination with his realistic and at times frightening style that makes him one of the best narrators of darkness separating him from his contemporaries, as his art transcends time, influencing 20th century modernism.

People do not relate to nature directly but do so through symbolic interpretations where symbols represent and stand for nature or any object of perception. Out of Ink: Interpretations from Chinese Contemporary Art explores the essential ideals of the ink painting tradition as manifest in the work of 13 contemporary artists at work in China today. Their art does not necessarily rely upon conventional materials - ink, paper, or brush - but encapsulates the cultural spirit of ink. The experimental forms of expression that underscores their practice are a prism through which to understand how artists are rethinking the conventions of ink to forge new ties to the present cultural context, and enrich this weighty tradition in the process. The exhibition curated by Karen Smith echoes content familiarly seen in ink painting, such as landscapes or natural forms, as single or juxtaposed elements from the natural world, as well as the role of calligraphy. These reveal the spirit of ink, a core value that is its most enduring esoteric quality, yet, none of the artists presented here claim to be ink artists. Instead they work with, appropriate, manipulate, or deconstruct, the spiritual and aesthetic ethos of "ink" as cultural metaphor, philosophical system, and as understanding of relationship between man and the physical world of form and space. In their respective ways, each artist makes a contribution to the future possibilities of a medium that has been the dynamic pulse of the nation's culture through China's long civilization.

SANART is the only association of aesthetics in Turkey. It has the mission of enthusing and building up a public for the raised awareness of issues related with aesthetics and art. For the past ten years now, it has carried this mission to the practical realm in Ankara, where it is based, through the organisation of symposia, exhibitions and publications. To coincide with the closure of the twentieth century, on its tenth year, SANART decided to re-evaluate the century in terms of various approaches to the field of aesthetics and art. Twelve participants, who were invited and whose texts are included in this book, were asked to bring forth specific issues within the general problematic of the twentieth century. The objective was more to do with understanding our concerns with the new century, while reflecting upon the previous one, than providing all encompassing accounts of historiography. Why the book? Publications are very important for SANART because as an association it seeks to maintain permanence in the cultural sphere of Turkey, and to achieve that permanence, although the continuity of temporal events help, it is essential to accumulate written material. All of the symposia that SANART has organised have been published or are pending publication. Because of the significance and timely relevance of the topic, this book aims to disseminate the ideas discussed in the symposium to a wider public than that of the locality of Ankara, to a world audience, which is why it has been decided to publish it in English. The programme of the symposium was arranged so that the first half focused on art work and aesthetics followed by the "avant-garde" discussion and the second half concentrated on issues of architecture, politics and aesthetics. In editing the book, the order of the sessions of the symposium was maintained so that the lines of thought that emerged during the Symposium can be followed in the Discussion and Afterwords without much difficulty. In an overview of the texts, it is possible to discern that one of the major shifts that occurred in art in the twentieth century was that with the advent of new technologies and the possibility of wider dissemination, artists vocally assumed new roles to themselves while simultaneously critics and theoreticians assigned new tasks to the domain of art.
