Thanking Chevalier for a message of sympathy after her husband's death in 1969 Eisenhower writes: "Your tribute to Ike warmed my heart and your message to me meant a great deal." 237 pp. Black cloth binding in fine condition; photo dust jacket with some wear to the edges otherwise in very good condition.<br style="">Chevalier it was reported in 1959 owed his life to Dwight D. Eisenhower: upon the liberation of Paris in 1945 Chevalier was threatened with death by firing squad for having entertained in France under the Nazi occupation. Chevalier who had been living with a Jewish woman at the time contended that he had only done so in order to facilitate a prisoner swap. Thanks to a word from General Eisenhower himself Chevalier was kept alive until an investigation could be carried out which proved that Chevalier was telling the truth.<br style="">The French actor cabaret singer and entertainer Maurice Chevalier is perhaps best known for his signature songs including "Louise" "Mimi" "Valentine" and "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" and for his films including The Love Parade and The Big Pond. His trademark attire was a boater hat which he always wore on stage with a tuxedo. In 1958 he starred with Leslie Caron and Louis Jourdan in Gigi and in the early 1960s he made eight films including Can-Can in 1960 and Fanny the following year.  The success of Gigi prompted Hollywood to give him an Academy Honorary Award that year for achievements in entertainment. <br style=""> Doubleday & Company, Inc. hardcover books

TO GET CLOSE TO THE FRONT" A charming letter at a vital time in Eisenhower's career: in the midst of planning the attack that would lead to the defeat of Germany here refered to casually as getting "absorbed in work." We're also let in on another side of Eisenhower's responsibilities: entertaining the entertainers. He bears this somewhat wearily but nonetheless we're left with a valuable record of the spirit and dedication of not just the entertainers but all women working on or near the front line. "Last eve was an event in our house. There are several movie stars here entertaining the soldiers and officers . . . . Last eve the troupe gave a performance for the officers of AFHQ but I would not go. Afterwards I sent them an invitation . . . to come up for an after performance supper. They did. There were: Kay Francis Martha Ray Carole Landis and Mitzi Mayfair. I was a bit fearful of how movie people would act & what they'd expect--but it all went off perfectly naturally & no embarrassment. . . . They work hard giving from 2 to 3 shows per day 6 days per week. Moreover they reflect an attitude that seems to be characteristic of all women British & American in this region. They want to get close to the front. The women seem to be more casual with respect to danger than do sic the men. These particular ones want to get up as close as possible to do their stuff--as do the Red Cross the WAACs the ATS etc etc. I suppose there are 50-75 American women in this city & every one tells me that their constant cry is 'Let me get up where there is action.' Many of my officers are quite willing to take cushy jobs far from the sound of bombs & bullets. . . . "No woman can . . . take your place. Don't worry about me . . . . I'm in love with you & with no one else." This last tempted fate written just months before Eisenhower met his long-term mistress Kay Summersby. "Last eve was an event in our house. With a note from Bill Robinson Vice-President of the Herald Tribune giving this typescript to Doug Black President of Doubleday the book's publisher. It was by Robinson's insistence that Eisenhower wrote these memoirs.<br/><br/>The typescript differs little from the first published edition with the following edits being the most significant:<br/><br/>Chapters 16 and 17 in the typescript "Pursuit" and "Battle of Supply" are arranged with slight modification in the published edition as "Pursuit and the Battle of Supply" chapter 16 and "Autumn Fighting of Germany's Frontier" chapter 17. <br/><br/>Chapters 22 and 23 "Europe after V-E Day" and "Russia" are also re-arranged in the published edition as "Victory's Aftermath" chapter 22 "Operation Study" chapter 23 and "Russia" chapter 24. The final paragraph of the typescript does not appear in the published edition and is replaced by an eight paragraph discussion of the merits of democracy in facing the growing threat of Communism.<br/><br/>After a gentlemen's agreement on Dec 30 1947 Eisenhower began work on the first draft of Crusade in Europe completing it March 29 1948. This draft was finished July 4 of that year and a final typescript now at Columbia University was produced before the book was published in the fall of 1948. Despite all of his other accomplishments he is still remembered first and foremost as an adman. In a fictional novel based on BBDO The Virgin Queene the Bruce Barton character named Barnham Dunn tried to explain his success<br/><br/>Alex F. Osborn was born in New York City May 241888 graduated Ph.B. in 1909 and Ph.M. in1921 at Hamilton College. Meanwhile he worked as a reporter for the Buffalo N.Y. Times in 1909 and for the Buffalo Express during the following two years. He was assistant secretary of the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce in 1911-12 and sales manager of the Hard Manufacturing Co. Buffalo from 1912 to 1915. In the latter year he entered the field of advertising as manager of the E. P Remington Advertising Co. Buffalo. During World War I he worked as a volunteer for the United War Work campaign and there met another young writer Bruce Barton. He was married in Buffalo Sept. 51916 to Helen daughter of Edward Emerson Coatsworth of the city a lawyer and had five children: Katharine Joan Marion Russell Bartonand Elinor. n 1919 Alex Osborn found the advertising agency of Barton Durstine and Osborn New York City with Bruce Barton and Roy Durstine. In 1928 the firm was merged with the George Batten Co. to formBatten Barton Durstine & Osborn. Inc. A partner in the original firm Osborn was named vice-president of the newly merged agency. Advanced to executive vice-president and general manager in 1939 he became vice-chairman of the board in 1946.
