Translated by Serpil Özaloglu. 1000 copies were printed. Hassan Fathy's plan for building the village of New Gourna, near Luxor, Egypt, without the use of more modern and expensive materials such as steel and concrete. Using mud bricks, the native technique that Fathy learned in Nubia, and such traditional Egyptian architectural designs as enclosed courtyards and vaulted roofing, Fathy worked with the villagers to tailor his designs to their needs. He taught them how to work with the bricks, supervised the erection of the buildings, and encouraged the revival of such ancient crafts as claustra (lattice designs in the mudwork) to adorn the buildings.

New English Paperback. Oblong large 8vo. (20 x 20 cm). In English. 112 p. Ills. Together, Süleymaniye (1550-1557) and Sultanahmet (1609-1616, better known today as the Blue Mosque) are an awe-inspiring testament to the power of faith and the splendour of the Ottoman Empire. These two mosques, bearing the names and housing the mausoleums of the Sultans who built them - Süleyman and Ahmed I - are supreme examples of Ottoman architecture, each richly adorned with stone carving, tiling and calligraphy. Each was built with an adjacent complex (külliye) which contained the finest schools of the time, as well as hospitals, shops, soup kitchens and public baths. This book is a richly illustrated guide to Süleymaniye and Sultanahmet. It includes an in-depth study of the architecture, situating the mosques within the wider context of the Ottoman political and artistic milieu of their time, and examining the religious, social and educational activity that revolved around each complex.

New New English Original binding with original dust wrapper. Oblong large 8vo. (23 x 24 cm). In French. Ills.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Mint. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). With a CD. 102 p. B/w ills. This book refutes the thesis of Samuel Huntington's Clash of Civilizations. Instead, it supports the Alliance of Civilizations supervised by the United Nations. It describes religious-historical and cultural monuments in the region including Istanbul Cibali-Fener-Balat-Ayvansaray where three monotheistic religions live together under the peaceful conditions and they practice their religions. The thesis of Alliance of Civilizations has been examined theoretically within the context of the book. We hope that thesis of the Alliance of Civilizations, co-chaired by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero under the umbrella of the United Nations, will make considerable contribution to the world peace.
