New New English Original binding with original dust wrapper. Oblong large 8vo. (23 x 24 cm). In French. Ills.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 13,5 cm). In English. 418 p. The official line that successive Turkish regimes have frequently repeated and which has firmly established itself in both Turkish and foreign public opinion is that the Republic of Turkey is one of those rare countries in which antisemitism has never taken root, and in which Jews have thus lived for centuries within a tolerant atmosphere of peace and tranquility, but it simply isn't true. Along with antisemitism are the conspiracy theories in which the "Jew" or the "Zionist" feature as the main actors that are widely seen throughout Turkish society. In fact, this state of affairs is not only pervasive but has even become "normal" to the point of banality, so much so that it tends to draw no reaction from either the country's intellectuals or politicians. This book contains a collection of author's published articles on the subject-a subject that has received no serious treatment in Turkey, and as such attempts to fill the gaping hole in our knowledge of this widespread yet rarely discussed phenomenon and, as such, stands as an indispensible source for those interested in Turkey and antisemitism.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 156 p. Apologies for the past: Two cases from Turkey. This book explores the issue of collective apology, and its potential to function as a symbolic form of restitution that publicly addresses and acknowledges the grievances faced by victimized groups. It explores two cases of collective apology in Turkey, "I Apologize" online signature campaign in 2008, and an apology speech carried out by a state official on the Dersim massacre in 2011. Both events raised significant public debate in Turkish society. Taking these two recent cases of collective apology and looking at them through the lens of existing scholarship on collective apology, this thesis explores the answers to a set of questions; on the format, wording and enactment of the apologies and their dealing with the issues of responsibility, and reconciliation.

In Ara Güler's words: ''My first book on Istanbul was in black and white, my second book, 'Vanished Colours', is in colour. Colour photographs lack the solidity of black-and-white, and in this book I have given priority not so much to artistic considerations as to an attempt to present the city of Istanbul in its own characteristic colours. My aim is not to produce art photography, but simply to reflect Istanbul as it really is. What does Istanbul mean to me? Istanbul is Jean Giraudoux' La Folle de Chaillot. Every since my childhood I have always identified Istanbul with the madwoman of Chaillot, a crazy woman of the type you can find in the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman civilisations...''. Architect of Sultan Abdulmecid: William James Smith.= Sultan Abdulmecid'in bir mimari: William James Smith. An English architect William James Smith had worked in Istanbul from 1842 to 1856, a most politically influential period for the British Empire. Smith, after his appointment to the prestigious project for the new Istanbul Embassy Building of United Kingdom, whose conceptual design was probably by renowned architect Sir Charles Barry, had attained the interest and trust of Ottoman statesmen. Consequently he was assigned to realise a number of important architectural projects contributing to the modernization of Ottoman Architecture. Some of the Smith¿s important works for the Ottoman Porte are: A military hospital [Gumussuyu Askeri Hastanesi], a naval hospital, a school of medicine later known as Mecidiye Kislasi then Taskisla, a part of the Selimiye Barracks, a Glass Pavilion in Dolmabahce Palace and Tophane Imperial Kiosk [Tophane Kasri] for Sultan Abdulmecid; a building for the Board of Trade, renovation of the Naum Theatre. His commissions for so many important buildings, in spite of the presence of the notable architects, namely Balyan and Fossati, is a proof of Sultan¿s appreciation of Smith¿s works. Smith worked for both the British Empire and the Ottoman Sultan for a considerable number of grand scale projects. Being Smith¿s first work of grand scale, Taskisla has had a major role in the history of the Ottoman Empire and Istanbul in addition to its own interesting construction history.

In the era of Westernization, also known as Ottoman Modernization, that took place throughout the entire 19th century and in the early 20th century, transformed the physical appearance of Istanbul. First and foremost the Balians, but also other Armenian architects such as Ohannes Serverian, Mgrdich Charkian, Bedros Nemtze, Mihran Azarian, Hovsep Aznavur, Levon Gureghian, the brothers Aram and Isaac Karakash, Kegham Kavafian, Yetvart Terziyan, Andon and Garabed Tulbendjian, who in earlier periods received their initial training within the industry, but later also graduated from schools in European countries, and ultimately graduated from the School of Fine Arts, played a great role in this transformation. This book is prepared to introduce the Armenian architects who contributed to Istanbul's architectural richness with their works and is the first attempt of its kind. We hope that it will inspire the academic studies in the field to be carried out in the future. The books published in Turkish-English and Armenian-English includes 6 articles written by Edhem Eldem, Afife Batur, Ahmet Ersoy, Alyson Wharton, Elmon Hançer and Lora Baytar; each article has a different approach to the architecture of Istanbul. Moreover, in the book there are more than 100 photos of the architectural structures built by the Armenian architects.
