"The Surname-i Hümayun literally translates into Imperial Festival Book, and were albums that commemorated celebrations in the Ottoman Empire in pictorial and textual detail. Such celebrations included mainly imperial weddings and circumcision festivals. These albums were commissioned by the Ottoman Imperial family, usually by the Sultan presiding at the time. The Surname recounts the festivities in order of when the events took place, which includes in detail processions, grand entrance of the Sultan, feasts, entertainers, musicians, dancers, gift giving, firework displays, circumcision and wedding ceremonies. Although many of the Surnames were made to celebrate circumcisions of Ottoman Princes, the first Surname was commissioned in 1524 for a wedding ceremony. This Surname-I Hümayun was commissioned for a circumcision festival, as well it was to commemorate Sultan Murad III's son Prince Mehmed. This festival lasted fifty-two days and was probably one of the most elaborate and grandiose festival the Ottomans had ever held, and it was well documented. The organization of this Surname was done chronologically, each day documented in order with what occurred. The book was created by an author named 'Intizami' which is a pen-name, and the illustrations were done mainly by court artists.".

New English Paperback. Oblong large 8vo. (20 x 20 cm). In English. 112 p. Ills. Together, Süleymaniye (1550-1557) and Sultanahmet (1609-1616, better known today as the Blue Mosque) are an awe-inspiring testament to the power of faith and the splendour of the Ottoman Empire. These two mosques, bearing the names and housing the mausoleums of the Sultans who built them - Süleyman and Ahmed I - are supreme examples of Ottoman architecture, each richly adorned with stone carving, tiling and calligraphy. Each was built with an adjacent complex (külliye) which contained the finest schools of the time, as well as hospitals, shops, soup kitchens and public baths. This book is a richly illustrated guide to Süleymaniye and Sultanahmet. It includes an in-depth study of the architecture, situating the mosques within the wider context of the Ottoman political and artistic milieu of their time, and examining the religious, social and educational activity that revolved around each complex.

"In 2004, the Istanbul Archaeological Museums started large-scale salvage excavations at Yenikapi within the scope of Marmaray-Metro projects. For the first time in Istanbul's history, archaeological excavations were conducted at one of its Byzantine harbors. When the excavations started, it was not known what this ancient harbor at the mouth of the Lykos (Bayrampasa) River would yield. At first, Ottoman remains were encountered in the excavation area, which covers over 58,000 square meters. Then, one of Constantinople's most important, and the world's best known harbors, the Theodosian Harbor, was reached only 1 meter below sea level. During the ongoing excavations, countless small finds and works of architecture were unearthed. In addition to wood and rope fragments, an unexpected find, a shipwreck, was found in 2005. As the excavation area expanded, a total of 37 ships dating between the 5th and 11th centuries were brought to light. Among the finds are very well preserved small and large merchantmen, as well as galleys from the Middle and Late Byzantine periods, which have been found for the first time. The Yenikapi wrecks constitute the largest collection of shipwrecks ever found together. Another surprise was waiting for the archaeologists 6,3 meters below sea level: Istanbul's oldest settlement. This Neolithic settlement dates back 8000 years and changes the writing of Istanbul's history. The footprints of Istanbulites who lived there thousands of years ago were found a few meters below. As the excavations go on uninterrupted, we have now acquired much new information about the city. This exhibition has been prepared in light of the finds from Yenikapi and their scientific study. It presents a section of the city from its first inhabitants to the present, and allows a multidimensional view of trade, seafaring, shipbuilding technology, and everyday life in Constantinople through four wrecks that were found together with their cargo. A publication by the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, Koç Foundation, Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations and Koç University Press".

Gathered from the joining of disciplines archaeology, art history, and the history of architecture and landscapean exceptional array of examples is presented, including architectural elements and decoration, sculpture and statuary, space and buildings, and textiles and other objects. Most significantly, this ground-breaking work reveals how objects, materials, and spaces attained new meanings in their afterlives through various modes of reuse. The scholarly contributions published here stem from the Tenth International ANAMED Annual Symposium "Spolia Reincarnated: Second Life of Spaces, Materials, Objects in Anatolia from Antiquity to the Ottoman Period" held at Istanbul's Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) in December 2015. This unique conference marked ANAMED's tenth anniversary and brought together many prominent scholars and former research center fellows, including the volume's editors.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 512 p. Ills. "This book approaches the Ottoman period of Robert College, founded by American missionaries in Constantinople in 1863, by focusing on hitherto insufficiently explored aspects of its sesquicentennial history, related to its nature and educational ideals, as well as to its student body. Being based on the college's archives, dispersed in Turkey and the United States, the government archives of Ottoman and early republican period, as well as other vernacular archives, the book delineates the specific place and role of the college in the field of Ottoman education by promoting Protestant ideals through liberal education. The so-called "secular Protestantism" affected the whole concept of education practiced at the college and it affected more or less the students' mindset. The college put emphasis on the formation of strong characters in its students so as to make them able to take responsibility for their own life and development. It was achieved, not only nor even mainly through the course of studies in a wide variety of fields, but also through the all-round atmosphere in the college and especially the personal relationship between the students and their instructors. On the basis of statistics drawn from various relevant sources, the book traces out the dynamics in student enrollment and outlines those periods in the college's history in which certain nationalities were prevalent, not only in terms of physical presence but also in terms of influence in the student body. The book provides also prosopographical research of the Bulgarian and Turkish students, based on data collected from the catalogues of students, preserved in the college's archives. Orlin Sabev (Orhan Salih by birth), born in Shumen (Bulgaria) in 1970, is Associate Professor at the Institute of Balkan Studies with Centre for Thracology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (Sofia). He obtained a Ph. D. in history at the same institute in 2000. He has published three books, two of them in Bulgarian, dealing with history of Ottoman education in the Bulgarian lands between fifteenth and eighteenth century (2001) and with the introduction of the first Ottoman Turkish printing press in Constantinople (2004). The latter came out also in Turkish translation in 2006 under the title 'Ibrahim Müteferrika ya da ilk Osmanli Matbaa Serüveni (1726-1746). Yeniden Degerlendirme'. Since then the Turkish translation has three editions. He has more than hundred articles dealing with various topics in the field of education, book history, print culture, and sexuality in Ottoman society.".
New English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 80 p. When looking at the distribution of infectious diseases in the world in general, it is seen that there is a distinct difference between developed and developing countries. Morbidity and mortality rates of infectious diseases decrease as the level of development increases. In other words, infectious diseases are mostly diseases of developing countries. Therefore, it is necessary to create an effective fighting program against infectious diseases. One of the most important components of effective fighting is the establishment of an effective surveillance system. Monitoring infectious diseases is essential for detecting outbreaks that demand public health response and control measures. Many methods are used for this purpose such as spatial clustering. This is defined as aggregation of disease cases anywhere. Clustering of the disease shows its relation with space. For this reason, cluster analysis is frequently used in epidemiology. It has been the main driving force to carry out the study on this relatively new issue for our country. The book is the product of this work.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). Color and b/w ills. 466 p. "In 1492, the Spanish monarchs expelled tens of thousands of Sephardic Jews from the Iberian Peninsula and other territories. Most Sephardim headed eastward and settled in Ottoman lands, where their language, known as Judeo-Spanish, survived and thrived for centuries. This book is the result of fieldwork in the Jewish community of Istanbul. It provides a historical and modern sociolinguistic account of the survival of the Judeo-Spanish dialect after centuries of fragmentation, French bilingualism, "Turkish only" language policies, emigration, and globalization. This work analyzes social patterns on the acquisition and use of Judeo-Spanish in the community as well as linguistic change throughout different generations of Istanbulite Sephardim. Focusing on several grammatical features, these data demonstrate that bilingualism with Turkish and reduced linguistic spaces promote language change. In a world where linguistic diversity is rapidly shrinking, the survival and future of Judeo-Spanish is a testament to the close bond between language, culture, community, and identity".

A detailed portrait of the Turkic people explores events since World War I that have rendered the nation a vital NATO ally and the site of a secular Islamic democracy, tracing centuries of citizen ancestry to offer insight into how Turkish culture has significantly impacted history. By the co-author of Turkey Unveiled. 20,000 first printing. With the end of the Soviet Union began independence for a half-dozen Turkic countries, where Istanbul-based reporter Pope has made forays for the past 15 years, traveling in both presidential airliners and faltering taxis. Pope does not organize his trips chronologically, but, rather, according to what he believes are the seven collective characteristics of Turkic peoples. One is the "military vocation" epitomized by Turkey itself, whose military is regarded as the guardian of secularism; a concomitant trait is predilection for the political strongman. None of the new Turkic states is a liberal democracy, and none less so than Turkmenistan, home to a shambolic personality cult devoted to its dictator. Pope's talks with officials are always revelatory of local and international politics, but readers will most value his perceptiveness about Turkic culture when he, speaking fluent Turkish, meets ordinary people. Some of these are Uygurs, the Turkic minority suppressed by communist China, and others are part of the Turkic diaspora in Europe and America. A sensitive presentation of how Turks view themselves and their future.
