On the 20th of that month a minor riot developed into a full scale insurrection and Sultan Ahmet III was forced to abdicate in favour of his nephew Mahmoud I. The janissaries were led by one of their own an Albanian by the name of Patrona Halil and for two months the empire was in the hands of the insurgents. They were eventually overthrown by the Grand Vizier the Mufti and Aga of the Janissaries with the help of the Khan of the Crimea and Patrona and 7000 of his supporters were put to death.
