Displayed at Pera Museum, Kariye, from Theodoros Metokhites to Thomas Whittemore; One Monument, Two Monumental Personalities is comprised largely of objects and documents on loan from abroad, the exhibition narrates the story of Kraiye, one of the globally renowned monuments of Istanbul, as well as the extraordinary tales of two of its 'builders', who lived six centuries apart. At one end stands fellow townsman Theodoros Metokhites, Byzantine thinker, poet and politician, who shaped Kariye at the turn of the 14th century and adorned it with priceless mosaics and frescoes. On the other end is American renaissance man and archaeologist Thomas Whittemore, who passionately and meticulously restored this structure to its former grandeur in the 1940s, consequently bestowing it to the world of culture and art as a museum. In between lies the unconventional story of a structure shaped by the footprints of these remarkable men. The former church of the monastery of Christ of the Chora, better known today as the Kariye Camisi or Kariye Museum, is one of the most impressive Byzantine monuments to survive in the modern city of Istanbul. Founded probably as early as the sixth century, rebuilt by members of the imperial family in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, and splendidly restored by the Byzantine humanist, poet, and prime minister Theodore Metochites between 1316 and 1321, the church of the Chora Monastery is today considered one of the most outstanding examples of Late Byzantine art and architecture to survive. While the building itself was already known as the 'Mosaic Mosque' during the nineteenth century, the fame of the church's rich and complex interior decoration rests by and large on an extensive restoration campaign initiated by the American scholar and philanthropist Thomas Whittemore, founder and director of the Byzantine Institute of America from 1930 to his death in 1950. It was the aim of this exhibition, to explore the history of the "Kariye" through its representation over the centuries, and to pay homage to the two men who were responsible for its restoration and conservation in the fourteenth and twentieth centuries respectively: Theodore Metochites and Thomas Whittemore. The exhibition furthermore aimed to celebrate the work of those who have helped to preserve the architecture of the Kariye and its extraordinary cycle of mosaics and frescoes during the 1940s and 1950s.

Geographers, archaeologists, linguists, architects, botanist and clergymen all travelled across the East from the late 18th until the mid-19th century researching their particular interests. After the Crimean War, the expedition-oriented travel that was so popular until the 1850s was replaced by a different kind of travel. The objective was no longer information gathering, but tourism. Based on materials selected from the vast collection of Pierre de Gigord, one of the leading collectors of Ottoman-era photographs and ephemera, this exhibition sheds light on the early years of mass tourism that replaced individual journeys of discovery and transformed travel culture.

The winner will be announced in June. The eleven shortlisted artists and designers are David Chalmers Alesworth, Rasheed Araeen, Lara Assouad, CANAN, Cevdet Erek, Sahand Hesamiyan, Lucia Koch, Ghulam Mohammad, Shahpour Pouyan, Wael Shawky ve Bahia Shehab. Treasury land from Akintiburnu to Bebek Garden that was bestowed upon Janissary Hasan Halife by Sultan Murad IV (1623-1640), was transferred to national treasury following a rebellion in 1631-1632 in the reign of Sultan Mehmed IV (1648-1687). In the reign of Sultan Ahmed III (1703-1730), treasury land from Hasan Halife Garden to Kayalar Village, was sold by Grand Vizier Damad Ibrahim Pasha in 1724/25. Grand Vizier Izzet Mehmed Pasha, who has a share in the said lands, built a pavilion just for the Sultan. Sultan Selim III (1789-1807) set foot on Izzetabad Pavilion for the first time upon the invitation of GRAND Vizier Izzet Mehmed Pasha, but later he frequently came to the Pavilion for pleasure and entertaining activities. After a fire on May 15th, 1798; Izzetabad Pavilion was burnt down. And Grand Vizier Izzet Mehmed Pasha died in Manisa on September 18th, 1812. Treasury land from Akintiburnu to Bebek Garden that was bestowed upon Janissary Hasan Halife by Sultan Murad IV (1623-1640), was transferred to national treasury following a rebellion in 1631-1632 in the reign of Sultan Mehmed IV (1648-1687). The pavilion was rebuilt and redecorated by Chief Architect Mustafa and Hayrullah Efendi from Sehremini, between the years 1800-1804, and the palace was used by Sultan Selim III and Mahmud II (1808-1839). When the Bayraktar Group bought Izzetâbâd Pavilion, there was nothing more than relics of the basement. Its construction and renovation was completed in 1999. Thanks to the Bayraktar Group, Istanbul and Turkey have regained a precious heritage from the period of Selim III. After four years, in 2003, we started out to initiate the research which would unearth the mysterious history of Izzetâbâd Pavilion and Akintiburnu, together with Dear Emine Çigdem Tugay and Dear Mehmet Selim Tugay. In the corridors of the history of Akintiburnu, tracing back to nearly 2 thousand years ago, we started to discover the sophisticated and colorful history of Izzetâbâd Pavilion which witnessed great joys as well as torments and conspiracies to date. As a result, the book of Izzetâbâd Pavilion, Time Flies Away from Akintiburnu was published to reveal the history of Izzetâbâd Pavilion and Akintiburnu in light of historical documents. Today, we have this precious work of art written by Dear Emine Çigdem Tugay and Dear Mehmet Selim Tugay, and which gained further value thanks to the highly professional design by Dear Joelle Imamoglu.
