New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 232 p., ills. Second Turkish Edition of Vasary's 'Cumans and Tatars: Oriental military in the pre-Ottoman Balkans, (1185 1365)'. The Cumans and the Tatars were nomadic warriors of the Eurasian steppe who exerted an enduring impact on the medieval Balkans. With this work, Istvan Vasary presents an extensive examination of their history from 1185 to 1365. The basic instrument of Cuman and Tatar political success was their military force, over which none of the Balkan warring factions could claim victory. As a consequence, groups of the Cumans and the Tatars settled and mingled with the local population in various regions of the Balkans. The Cumans were the founders of three successive Bulgarian dynasties (Asenids, Terterids and Shishmanids) and the Wallachian dynasty (Basarabids). They also played an active role in Byzantium, Hungary and Serbia, with Cuman immigrants being integrated into each country s elite. This book also demonstrates how the prevailing political anarchy in the Balkans in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries made it ripe for the Ottoman conquest.

"In 1836 William Hamilton identified the site of Amorium and provided the first description of the ancient ruins. "We reached the deserted and dreary site of what was once a populous city.Near the centre of the valley in which the ruins are situated. is an insulated hill about half a mile in circumference, on which may still be traced a portion of the walls of an Acropolis. The principal part of the town is to the S. and S.W. of the Acropolis. These ruins.appear chiefly to date from the early Byzantine or Christian period., marking the existence of one of those large and important towns which were destroyed in this part of Asia Minor by the irruptions of the Saracens and the Seljukian monarchs of Iconium." Much of what Hamilton described has now disappeared, but since 1988 the Amorium Excavations Project has been able to reveal other ruins that testify to the accuracy of his assessment of Amorium as an important Roman and Byzantine city. This guidebook aims to give an interim account of the on-going excavations and set the site in its proper historical context.".

The religious sites of the Chiristian peoples who worshipped in the city gives one the opportunity to do just that. Some of these churches are still active, some are in ruins, and some have been turned into mosques - but they all carry the scent of histor within their stones, their domes and arches, their altars, their chapels. Edith Oyhon and Bente Etingu have wandered in the streets of Istanbul searching for traces of time past. [John the Eunoch Mystery #6]Why are sheep in a remote Egyptian village cutting their own throats?.That's the mystery Emperor Justinian inexplicably sends his Lord Chamberlain John the Eunuch to solve, at the very time John desperately needs to clear himself of accusations he murdered a senator in the Hippodrome. Mehenopolis, a pilgrim destination thanks to its ancient shrine to a snake deity as well as the home of the late sheep, is nearly as byzantine in its ways and undercurrents as Constantinople. Among suspicious characters John encounters are a pretentious local landowner battling a self-styled magician for control of the lucrative shrine, an exiled heretical cleric, an itinerant bee-keeper, and a disgraced charioteer. Meanwhile, in Constantinople, John's good friend Anatolius does his best to trace the senator's murderer. At stake are not only John's honor and his head, but also the family with whom he recently reunited, now in danger of being broken apart or worse.''
