The exhibition "Hippodrome/ Atmeydani: A Stage for Istanbul's History" takes the visitor on a tour of one of the major architectural achievements of Byzantine Constantinople. Images from the fifteenth and early sixteenth century show the structure of the Hippodrome to have been fairly well preserved at the time of the Ottoman conquest. The construction of Ottoman palaces and the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, however, played a major role in the dismantling of the remains of the Hippodrome. Nevertheless, this large open space's association with horses was preserved. It became known as Atmeydani (Horse Square) during the Ottoman era and was used for playing the equestrian game cirit. The Ottomans and the sultans also continued to hold celebrations and public spectacles in the area. Visitors to the Hippodrome today can view its three surviving monuments-the masonry obelisk, the Serpent Column, and the Egyptian obelisk-but few can easily imagine the splendor and size of the original Hippodrome that stood for more than eleven centuries."The Hippodrome/ Atmeydani: Istanbul's Stage of History" exhibition almost rebuilds the magnificent Hippodrome decorated with exceptionally beautiful monuments and the Atmeydani of the Ottoman period, and examines the life surrounding them.

Byzantium in Popular Culture navigates through the eclectic presence of Byzantium in popular culture. Curated by Emir Alisik, the exhibition explores multiple and conflicting meanings of Byzantinism, and questions popular culture?s interaction with the Byzantine legacy. It scrutinizes a selection of motifs found in visual arts, literature, metal music, comics and graphic novels, video games, movies, and fashion representing Byzantium in popular culture. Emir Alisik and Gulru Tanman co-authors the introductory chapter to the catalogue accompanying ?What Byzantinism Is This in Istanbul!?: Byzantium in Popular Culture. The volume brings together the articles of 10 researchers who examine and interpret Byzantinism?s representations in various fields of art. The articles by Roland Betancourt, Felice Lifshitz, Brigitte Pitarakis, Sinan Ekim, Yagmur Karakaya, Elif Demirtiken, Jeremy J. Swist, Marco Fasolio, Haris Theodorelis-Rigas, and Emir Alisik discuss how Byzantinisms appearing in various domains of popular culture relate to the Byzantine history depending on the context in which those artworks are produced.

"The book brings together the extant mosaics of the Great Palace (Büyük Saray Mosaic Museum), Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya Museum), the Virgin Pammakaristos (Fethiye Museum), St. Saviour in Chora (Kariye Museum) and Istanbul Archaeological Museums. Except for the few panels brought from elsewhere and now kept in the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, all of the mosaics in this book were made in Istanbul, known then as Constantinople. Chronologically, the earliest of these mosaics is from the late Roman period and the latest from the early fourteenth century. Even if they are far from giving the development of the art of mosaic in the capital these pavements reflect the importance that was afforded to this art. In this volume they are grouped under the name of the monument to which they belong. Constantinople suffered so many natural disasters and had to be rebuilt so many times that the mosaics which decorated the buildings of the late Roman/early Byzantine period, lie under modern buildings in the debris of fires and earthquakes. Unless some of these are encountered accidentally during construction work and salvaged, there is almost no hope of bringing them to light.".

'City of the Caesars Kayseri is devoted to the city of Kayseri, described by Evliyâ Çelebi as the "city of the caesars". This account is not confined to the city's excellent climate, which Evliyâ attributes to "the gentle breezes that blow constantly throughout summer and autumn, since the city lies beneath Mount Erciyes in the centre of Anatolia, open to the north and west but closed to the pernicious southwesterly winds", and to the marvellous cured beef and garlic sausage "sent as gifts to rulers", but seeks to embrace its entire legacy and culture in a broad sweep extending from antiquity to the Seljuks, Ottomans and the present day, including its monumental and vernacular architecture, Mount Erciyes, stuffed dumplings and music. In City of the Caesars Kayseri the reader is taken on a step by step journey tracing the past of the city and province, from Erkilet to Tavlusun, Germir, Talas, Soganli and Gesi, recording all its memorable aspects not just in writing but in lavish illustrations. Fikri Kulakoglu has written about Kültepe/Kanesh, Anatolia's ancient international trading centre; Nilay Çoragan Karakaya about Kayseri's Roman and Byzantine monuments; Mustafa Çayirdag about the Seljuk period; Seyda Güngör Açikgöz about the Ottoman period; and Vacit Imamoglu about daily life and vernacular architecture. This is the latest in the series of city monographs published by Yapi Kredi Publications, following on from Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Bursa, Trabzon, Edirne, Diyarbakir, Adana, Konya, Urfa, Balikesir, Mersin, Mardin, Kars, Antep, Kastamonu, Maras, Denizli and Çanakkale.
