The subject matter of the volume is the former Church of Saint Sophia, today's Ayasofya Museum built by Justinian the Great in 532-37. After it was built, for many centuries both Christians and Moslems believed that it was not the talent, experience and courage of its builders but the hand of God that must have made such a monument possible. Scholars regard the building as a unique synthesis of the architectural traditions which existed in the sixth-century Byzantine world. None of the master architects of the Byzantine Empire nor those of the West would dare to repeat its plan during the following centuries. St Sophia witnessed the golden days of Constantinople, its suffering at the hands of the soldiers of the Fourth Crusade, its Palaiologos revival and its fall to the Ottoman Turks. In a single day the ringing of its bells were replaced by the call of 'muezzins'. After Constantinople was turned into the capital of the Ottoman Empire the monument became a source of legends and stories for Moslem writers. Its plan and size served as a source of inspiration and challenge for the Ottoman architects. The book covers the early history of Byzantium and Constantinople, the first and second churches of Saint Sophia which were built on the same spot, the Nika (Victory) Riots and construction of present-day building and its history first as a mosque and later as a museum. The last part of the volume deals with its surviving mosaics and includes pictures of all of them. The text is supplemented with plans and drawings of the Fossatis who restored the monument in the nineteenth century.

Very Good German Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In German. 20 p., iv numerous b/w plates (Tafeln). Ein Weiteres Sultansbild von Gentile Bellini aus russischem Besitz. A study on Gentile Bellini, (1430-1507), was an Italian painter of the school of Venice. He came from Venice's leading family of painters, and at least in the early part of his career was more highly regarded than his younger brother Giovanni Bellini, the reverse of the case today. From 1474 he was the official portrait artist for the Doges of Venice, and as well as his portraits he painted a number of very large subjects with multitudes of figures, especially for the Scuole Grandi of Venice, wealthy confraternities that were very important in Venetian patrician social life. In 1479 he was sent to Constantinople by the Venetian government when the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II requested an artist; he returned the next year. Thereafter a number of his subjects were set in the East, and he is one of the founders of the Orientalist tradition in Western painting. His portrait of the Sultan was also copied in paintings and prints and became known all over Europe.

This is a biography of the city originally known as Byzantium, later renamed Constantinople and now called Istanbul. With a population of 10 million, it's the largest city in Turkey, adorned with splendid monuments of both Ottoman and Byzantium empires. This book gives an account of the city's history from the time of its founding up to the present day along with notes on the monuments that have survived from the successive epochs of its past. It's a biography rather than a political or architectural city with the emphasis on the life of the people and of the city.414p. plates illus, bliography.index 1" chip to DJ.else fine Book
