After teaching at Greek schools in Plovdiv (Greek: Filippoupolis) and Giresun (Greek: Kerasounta), Ioannidis came in Trebizond, where he taught at the Frontistmon. In his (History and statistics of Trebizond and the surrounding areas, including the Greek language spoken in the region), Istanbul 1870, he published folklore data he had collected during extensive field studies. Among Ioannidis' achievements is the discovery of the MS of the Byzantine Epic of Digenis Akritas, which was published by Sathas and Legrand, and eventually later also by himself.
