Edited by Panayotis C. Christou. Nicholas Kabasilas or Cabasilas, (1319-1392) was a Byzantine mystic and theological writer. Kabasilas is a saint within the Orthodox Church. His feast day is June 20. The Roman Catholic Church uses extracts from his Life in Christ as readings in the Liturgy of the Hours (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of the Fifth Week of Easter in Year II of the two-year cycle for the Office of Readings). He was on intimate terms with the emperor John VI Kantakouzenos, whom he accompanied in his retirement to a monastery. He was once thought to have succeeded his uncle Neilos Kabasilas as archbishop of Thessalonica; however contemporary records of that see do not show Nicholas as serving in the capacity of archbishop. It is more likely that he served as a priest at the Mangana Monastery at Constantinople. In the Hesychast controversy he took the side of the monks of Mount Athos and Saint Gregory Palamas. This offprint from the Greek journal published in a long run from 1928 to 1961 in 24 volumes, examines the 14th-century coastline of the Byzantine Empire of Trebizond with toponyms and topography on two portolan maps of the period. "Bryer was a British historian of the Byzantine Empire and founder of the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman, and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Birmingham. Part of his childhood was spent in Jerusalem and he was acquainted with Sir Steven Runciman, historian, and Byzantine Scholar. He initially remained at Balliol for his doctorate on the Empire of Trebizond, which he completed in 1967, but in 1964 he moved to the University of Birmingham where he created a program in Byzantine studies. In 1975 he founded the journal Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. From 1976, he was the founding Director of the Centre for Byzantine Studies, and in 1980 he was appointed Professor of Byzantine Studies, a post which he held until 1999." (Wikipedia). Not in OCLC.

The time frame of the book is more functional than academic, it begins with the New Testament and ends in 1453. The book's layout is unique and userfriendly. It contains 300 short descriptive "profiles" that are listed numerically (1 to 300), with no chapters. The numbering system allows for crossreferencing within the individual "profiles." The book also includes two table of contents, one chronological and the other geographical. The goal of the book is help people worldwide not only discover that Turkey is the land of the Bible, but it is also the primary and central land of the early church. There is no other book of its kind available today.

The city of Nicaea was located near a large lake and fertile plain, which was the main reason of city's importance through the ages. Notable for its climate and geographical features, it was a socio-political and economic centre of the Bithynia. It has always been one of the most important cities in the region during the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuks and Ottoman periods. Although the Roman Theatre is the most striking structure of the city, other architectural remains such as tombs, bridges, aqueducts, city walls and gates are still standing. The Roman theatre at Nicaea is located in the southwestern part of the city, close to the city walls and Lake Iznik (Ascania Limme). One of the most impressive archeological buildings in Anatolia, the theatre has been a frequent destination for western travellers for many years. The first scientific studies on the theatre were conducted in 1938 by A. M. Schneider in order to have a better idea of the substructures. The excavations revealed that the theatre was built on a Hellenistic stratum. Although it ceased to function as a theatre in the Late Roman Period (4th cent. AD), it was used for different purposes in the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
