This large collection of testimonies and personal narratives of Holocaust survivors was compiled and edited by the novelist Shammai Golan; he was born in Poland in 1933, and spent World War II under Nazi occupation and in Siberia. After the death of his parents, he was placed in an orphanage and immigrated illegally to Palestine in 1947. Golan studied literature and history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Later, he taught literature, ran the Hebrew Writers` House in Jerusalem, and served as cultural attache in Mexico and Moscow. He was also chairman of the Hebrew Writers` Association. On 1 April 1933, the Nazis carried out the first nationwide, planned action against Jews: a boycott targeting Jewish businesses and professionals. It was both a reprisal and an act of warning. On the day of the boycott, the SA stood menacingly in front of Jewish-owned department stores and retail establishments, and the offices of professionals such as doctors and lawyers. Throughout Germany, rare acts of violence against individual Jews and Jewish property occurred. Article subject written on cover and some underlining on first page, but all text is clear. As president of the Belgian Committee for Refugees from Nazi Germany, he was instrumental in the rescue of the passengers from the ship St. Louis, which was sent back from Cuba and finally permitted to land in Antwerp.
