In the decade and a half following the end of World War II, that global conflagration which brought about the death of one-third of the Jewish people and the destruction of much of European Jewish communal life, American Jewry found many times, places, and modes of expression to articulate its intense reactions to that calamity. While historians may find it difficult, if not nearly impossible, to recreate the ways in which individual Jews talked about this catastrophic event in their homes or how they incorporated direct references and analogies to it into the discourse of their private spheres of everyday life, Jewish institutions synagogues, schools, summer camps, publishing houses, magazines and newspapers left an easily recoverable paper trail that reveals a community that felt itself obliged to remember and commemorate. RARE EARLY ILLUSTRATED WORK ON THE HORRORS OF THE HOLOCAUST. The evocative illustrations include Jews being rounded up for transport to the camps a depiction of the "death wagons" used for transport the rebellion in the ghetto partisans Treblinka the "monster" Nazi the Underground resistence and more. The album of illustrations was prepared and published during the most intense years of the Holocaust.<br> Lea Grundig 1906 – 1977 was a German painter and graphic artist. In the mid-1930s her work reflected themes of the new Nazi age with her cycles "Harzburger Front" "Unterm Hakenkreuz" 1936 "Der Jude ist schuld!" 1935–38 "Krieg droht!"1935–37 "Im Tal des Todes" 1942/43 and "Ghetto".<br> In 1935 a ban was imposed on exhibits of her work and in May 1936 she was arrested. Later in 1936 she traveled to Switzerland but she then returned to her home city and it was in Dresden that in May 1938 she was again arrested. In March 1939 she was found guilty of "Preparing to commit High Treason" »Vorbereitung zum Hochverrat« as a result of her Communist activities and/or her Jewish provenance and was sentenced to four months imprisonment. She served her sentence which in the event lasted till November/December 1939 in a prison in Dresden. However on her release she was granted an emigration permit. She emigrated to Bratislava then the capital of the still notionally independent Slovak Republic Slovakia. In 1940 she reached a refugee camp in Slovakia from where she moved as an exile to Palestine. Here she survived in a British internment camp at Atlit till 1942. On release she remained till the end of 1948 in Palestine living successively in Haifa and Tel Aviv. She was again able to show her work legally: exhibitions of her work took place not just in Palestine where she was living but also in the USA France South Africa and Great Britain. Holocaust-era Jewish imprint from Germany defending the theory that the majority of Ashkenazi Jews descended from the Khazar kingdom rather than from the ancient Middle-Eastern Israelites. Significant in the context of Nazi-Germany because of the use by Antisemites of the Khazar theory to label modern European Jews as fakes. It is historically attested that for some 150 years Judaism was the official religion of the Khazars, a nation occupying the region between the Don and the Caspian; its chief monument in Jewish literature is the correspondence between the Spanish diplomat Hasdai ibn Shaprut and the Khazar sovereign Joseph. Grätz in his Geschichte der Juden (vol. V) gives an epitome of these documents, without questioning their genuineness; that, however, has been frequently disputed, and the purpose of this pamphlet is to rebut the arguments adduced in favor of their being forgeries of a later period. One of these is based on the Messianic hopes expressed by Hasdai, but Herr Landau is able to show that such were commonly harboured by Hasdais contemporaries. He is further able to produce a number of parallels to the phraseology of the letter from the writings of Menahem b. Saruk, who acted as Hasdais secretary. In the second part of his pamphlet he defends against Kokovcoc the authenticity of a document published by Schechter from the Geniza- collection in Cambridge, ostensibly of the tenth century, and which Herr Landau holds to have been addressed to Hasdai, and indeed to have been the source of the knowledge displayed in his letter about the affairs of the Khazars.
