No errata slip present. Original publisher's decorative paper-covered boards with printed paper spine and cover labels. 18 x 12 cm. The spine label is sunned and slightly chipped with no impact on lettering; light wear to spine ends and a tiny tear to the head of the spine. The endpapers are slightly tanned; the text block shows mild uniform toning. Still a very good copy of a fragile volume. Bookseller's ticket of The Holliday Bookshop New York 10 W. 47th St. on the rear pastedown. PROVENANCE: This copy from the library of Irma Liebmann Harris 1885-1969 with her engraved bookplate on the front pastedown. Harris was a member of a prominent Jewish family from Atlanta Georgia and a leading figure in the city's social and cultural life. She was the daughter of Isaac Liebman founder and president of the Atlanta Paper Company 18861924. In 1908 she married Arthur Israel Harris 18811963 who succeeded Liebman as president of the company 19241946 and later served as chairman 19471957. The firm pioneered wet-strength packaging vital to the U.S. military during World War II and secured major contracts with Coca-Cola and other beverage companies. Irma Harris was a civic leader serving with the Girl Scouts the Atlanta USO during World War II Travelers Aid the Atlanta Council of Jewish Women and as founder and president of the Peachtree Garden Club. An avid art and book collector she read extensively in French and German. Her bookplate is signed in the plate K. Merrill likely the work of the American painter and etcher Katherine Merrill 18761962. FIRST EDITION. Some copies are found with an errata slip tipped-in before the title page that states "The first story in this book 'The Gentleman from San Francisco' is translated by D.H. Lawrence and S.S. Koteliansky. Owing to a mistake Mr. Lawrence's name has been omitted from the title-page. The three other stories are translated by S.S. Koteliansky and Leonard Woolf." The title story was first printed in 1915 in the Russian anthology "Provo." It is set on the island of Capri where the author lived the last few winters before the start of the First World War. He would take on the role of Sherlock Holmes for which he is best known beginning in 1939.<br/><br/>Beige titled wrappers with M.G.M. label dated AUGUST 10 1929 with credits for author S.S.
