Original Nazi anti-resistance poster from occupied Amsterdam announcing that “a number of people have been shot by firing squad or on the spot in recent days for attempting to commit sabotage against the German occupying forces†and warning that “The population of the city of Amsterdam is seriously warned to refrain from anything that endangers public peace and security. Violations of this will be severely punished.†<br> A final sentence notes in all capital letters that “TEARING DOWN OR DAMAGING THIS POSTER IS PUNISHABLE.â€<br> The handwritten date “16-9-44†is legible in the lower right corner; we presume this to be the date that the poster was originally either put up or taken down. <br> Anne Frank's life in Amsterdam was defined by the Nazi occupation and her family's subsequent hiding to evade persecution. The Nazi invasion in 1940 led to the implementation of anti-Jewish laws forcing the Frank family to go into hiding in 1942 to avoid deportation to concentration camps. During this time Anne documented her experiences and thoughts in her diary which later became the world’s defining first-hand account of Jewish life during the Holocaust. <br> Over 80% of Amsterdam’s 79000 Jews were murdered by the Nazis. <br> We have been able to locate no other surviving copies of this rare original Nazi poster from occupied Amsterdam.<br> Paper very slightly age toned as expected but colors and text remain bright and clear. A vertical and horizontal fold probably dating to the date of production remain but with no tears. An amazingly well-preserved original Nazi poster from the occupation of Amsterdam. This directory here in its first year of publication is an extremely detailed compendium of information and statistics on virtually every aspect of Colorado territory covering its history geography and geology natural resources etc. "This Directory gives useful information on the early territorial history of Colorado including the various conventions and forms of government in the early days railroads colonization and early mining" - Streeter. The volume also includes an accurate directory for Denver Golden City Black Hawk Central City Nevada Idaho Georgetown Greeley Colorado City Pueblo Trinidad etc. An appendix for the Denver directory includes the noted western artist A.E. Mathews who had recently published GEMS OF ROCKY MOUNTAIN SCENERY and the Chinese tea dealer Tang Fee. This text is further supplemented by more than 200 pages of advertisements for local businesses. A more useful and comprehensive guide to pre- statehood Colorado would be difficult to find. Though published in Denver by Samuel Wallihan who also edited the work this book was printed in Chicago and is therefore also an example of a Chicago ante-fire imprint. However it is not listed in the American Imprints Inventory list of Ante-Fire imprints nor is it in Eberstadt Graff or Decker. Howell paid $110 for the Streeter copy in 1969. HOWES C611. Unpaginated 15 pp. Illustrated from black & white photographs. Leaves facing wrappers lightly foxed; light offset from illustrations. A very good copy of a very scarce catalogue. Original gray wrappers printed in brown on the front cover and stapled; moderately soiled and lightly edgeworn. A priced catalogue illustrated with pictures of the dolls grouped and numbered of the creator and producer Mrs. Smith of her staff of twelve women doll-makers of their work room with dolls in process and of a child probably her daughter with her collection of the dolls including "the colored 'Mammy' nurse." Customers could choose from seven sizes and 47 styles with further options e.g. they could be "painted to represent any race of people"; her black dolls are thought to be the first manufactured in the South. Prices ranged from $1 for the most basic to $10 for an elaborately dressed model. The Alabama Indestructible Rag Doll also Ella Smith Doll and Alabama Baby had a considerable success in the region. This catalogue gives meticulous detail and instructions firmly warns against patent infringement refers to hygienic concerns and shows a small manufacturing company founded and run by a woman employing women to produce products for women and their daughters. Roy8vo 36pp. Hardcover in original cream pigskin with an abstract design of blue and black onlays and is lightly soiled with a darker mark on the lower spine being slightly splayed as well for reasons best known to specialist collectors internally this unusual book is comprised of Kelmscott hand-made paper that is clean and unfoxed with the requisite uneven fore-edges. Number 272 of only 300 copies ever produced with a lengthy introduction by D.H Lawrence this "is a story within a story contained within Dostoevsky's 1880 novel The Brothers Karamazov. It is recited by Ivan Karamazov during a conversation with his brother Alexei a novice monk about the possibility of a personal and benevolent God". This important original translation was made by Samuel S. Koteliansky a famous Ukrainian translator of Russian literature into English. Chekov was another who benefitted from his support as well as Dostoevsky and Rozanov amongst others being the manager of the prominent literary journal The Adelphi that published works of Lawrence Katherine Mansfield and even Dylan Thomas in the rarified world of mid-20th century English letters together with Leonard and Virginia Woolf. Old folds with neat professional reinforcement on the verso small chips and tears in the margins mostly at the corners a sound and very good example. Interesting political broadside from a little-known and relatively short-lived progressive party that was interested in printing money in order to buy land for poor people between the towns of Fitchburg and Leominster in order to make it a single city. The dating of the broadside is a little confusing: dated in 1885 but then mentions meetings in 1886 and 1887 the one in 1887 seemingly anticipates a meeting in October of 1887. One statement notes: "Our party point and plan is to improve strengthen and build up the government and remove the burden of taxes from the people and ever stand ready to receive any good move come before them and have women a chance to vote." OCLC locates no copies. unknown

A very good copy with some smudging and light staining in a supplied but sympathetic very good price-clipped dust jacket with slight internal stains. Inscribed by the author: "To Dr. Hugh Stott Taylor With great appreciation for his gracious assistance and with warm personal regards. S.S. Van Dine." The English-born Taylor was a chemist who spent much of his life at Princeton and who in World War II played a prominent role in the American scientific effort directing a number of research projects and contributing to the development of the atomic bomb with his discovery of the most effective catalyst for producing heavy water. He was knighted by both the Queen and the Pope in the same month. A Chair in chemistry is named for him at Princeton. The inscription would seem to indicate that Taylor provided advice to Van Dine about the novel or at least to Willard Huntington Wright as Van Dine was a pseudonym.
