Dinner menu from the S.S. Lurline for September 24 1953 that features cover art by Eugene Savage. There were four ocean liners christened S.S. Lurline by Matson Lines these menus were for the fourth ship with that name. The S.S. Lurline was a luxury ocean liner that would take passengers from the American West Coast to Hawaii and Australia. The Hawaiian port was Honolulu where most passengers would disembark the ship and make a beeline for Matson's renowned Waikiki hotel and resort the Royal Hawaiian.<br/><br/>Eugene Francis Savage 1883-1978 was a trained sculptor and artist who was primarily known for his large murals. Savage was commissioned by Matson Navigation Lines to paint nine large 4' x 8' Hawaiian themed murals that were intended to be displayed on Matson ocean liners. These murals were completed in 1940 but due to American involvement in World Ward II the ships were dedicated to the war effort and the murals were never installed. In 1948 the Murals were used as covers for the menus on the S.S. It was also adapted to a film version in 1934 starring Warren William as Vance. A guest at an estate in northern Manhattan Inwood Hill Park dives into the swimming pool and disappears. His murder brings up references to a mythological dragon which is said to prey on the imprudent but Philo Vance uses his knowledge of both dragons and criminals to demonstrate whodunit. The estate in the novel was based on Tryon Hall built in 1907 by C. K. G. Billings a retired president of the Chicago Coke and Gas Company. In 1917 he sold the mansion to John D. Rockefeller Jr. The mansion burned down in 1926 and Rockefeller developed the property and others into Fort Tryon Park which he then donated to New York City. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "S. S. It was the first animated Disney film in which none of the legendary "nine old men" were involved in the animation process. Ken Anderson created the beloved dragon loosely modeling him after historical Asian imagery. Upon release the film was criticized for its composite animation and underdeveloped plot. However it was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Original Song and Original song score. <br/><br/>Shot on location in California. <br/><br/>10 x 8 inches.
