50076Elkin Mathews & Marrot. London. 1930 First edition thus. Roy8vo 36pp. Hardcover in original cream pigskin with an abstract design of blue and black onlays and is lightly soiled with a darker mark on the lower spine being slightly splayed as well for reasons best known to specialist collectors internally this unusual book is comprised of Kelmscott hand-made paper that is clean and unfoxed with the requisite uneven fore-edges. Number 272 of only 300 copies ever produced with a lengthy introduction by D.H Lawrence this "is a story within a story contained within Dostoevsky's 1880 novel The Brothers Karamazov. It is recited by Ivan Karamazov during a conversation with his brother Alexei a novice monk about the possibility of a personal and benevolent God". This important original translation was made by Samuel S. Koteliansky a famous Ukrainian translator of Russian literature into English. Chekov was another who benefitted from his support as well as Dostoevsky and Rozanov amongst others being the manager of the prominent literary journal The Adelphi that published works of Lawrence Katherine Mansfield and even Dylan Thomas in the rarified world of mid-20th century English letters together with Leonard and Virginia Woolf. Hence the prominence of his name on the front board under the title and geometric pattern. Obviously extremely scarce anywhere in the world. Elkin, Mathews & Marrot. 1938B872New York: Scribners 1938. First. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. S. S. Van Dine is the pen name used by American art critic Willard Huntington Wright 1888 – 1939 when he wrote detective novels. Wright was active in avant-garde cultural circles in pre-World War I New York and under the pen name which he originally used to conceal his identity he created the fictional detective Philo Vance a sleuth and aesthete who first appeared in books in the 1920s then in films and on the radio.

The Gracie Allen Murder Case features the zany half of the Burns and Allen comedy team. It is in some ways a roman à clef including not just Burns and Allen but also such characters as Gracie's mother and brother. George Burns after all has described the couple's act as "All I had to do was ask 'Gracie how's your brother' and she talked for 38 years." That gave the book an unusual feel as did the comic tone of much of Gracie's dialogue. This tone suddenly shifts in a later chapter to one character's philosophically anguished speculations and then back again to Gracie.

This copy is very good in yellow cloth with black titles on the spine and front cover. Minor bumping and fading at the edges. Text is age toned with some spotting on the leading page edges but no other marks or damage. The uncommon DJ is unclipped with minor chipping at the edges and moderate soiling. BI25. Scribners hardcover
