Kar Höllenreiner était l'un des survivants du génocide Tzigane. Arrêté en 44, il avait d'abord connu les camps de concentration de Dachau et de Buchenwald avant d'être déporté à Auschwitz où Il fut l'un des 40 cobayes choisis pour servir aux expériences sur l'eau de mer, menée entre autres par le médecin nazi Wilhelm Beiglböck. Lors du procès de ce dernier, alors qu'il est auditionné comme témoin, il gifle son ancien tortionnaire. Il est condamné à 90 jours de prison pour manque de respect au Tribunal, sentence qui sera cependant levée peu de temps après.

This is one of the large double-page city-view woodcuts from the workshop of Mighael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff beneith 24 lines of text. The view of Venice was adapted from the 1486 woodcut by Erhard Reuwich in the Sanctae Perigrinationes. It is handsomely and finely handcoloured in blues greens yellows reds grays etc. Double-page folio ca. 540 x 364 mm handsomely mounted framed and glazed. Leaves XLIII and XLIIII. In fine condition and very well preserved and presented. FROM THE FIRST EDITION OF THE NUREMBERG CHRONICLE ARGUABLY THE GREATEST ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF THE 15TH CENTURY. The artists Michael Wolgemut the well-known teacher of Albrecht Dürer and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff have been praised and admired for over five-hundred years for their contributions to one of the monuments of early printing. David Bland calls it "a marvelous book and a landmark in the history of illustration" and through the ages it has more than fulfilled Koberger's prophecy that it would be "the delight of the men of learning and of everyone who had any education at all."<br> HIGHLY IMPORTANT INCUNABLE the “Nuremberg Chronicle†is the most extensively illustrated book of the fifteenth century and after the Gutenberg Bible the most celebrated book printed in the fifteenth century. The colophon explicitly acknowledges the contributions of the artists Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Binding somewhat worn two cornerpieces and one clasp lacking rebacked; internally somewhat shaken a few minor marginal tears and stains very extensively annotated in two or more hands. <br/><br/>This is the first edition of the revised 1564 Nuremberg city laws. These replacing a code previously enacted in 1498 are thematically organized into sections on court and procedural law; contracts right of distraint limitation law fishing law planning and building law; and the law of inheritance in which the folding table of genealogical relations frequently missing is placed. Ownership inscription of Henry Walker on front pastedown presentation inscription from George W. Walker to Walter B. Beals on ffep with Walker's signature below. Laid in are several items from Charles Scribner's Sons Rare Book Department offering this book as part of a collection to a Mr. James M. Blackford of Eugene Oregon. Contemporary mottled calf red spine label with gilt lettering. Boards worn and rubbed around edges page block toned and foxed throughout lacking rear endpaper. Few pencil annotations to the text couple plates with light damp staining to edges. A very good copy in attractive contemporary binding. <br /> <br /> An interesting text with interesting provenance belonging to Seattle judge Walter B. Beals who served on the Washington Supreme Court from 1928-46 and '46-51. He also presided over the "Doctor's Trial" part of the Nuremberg Tribunals in 1946-47 taking a leave of absence from his post as chief justice in Washington. The prior owner was George. W. Walker of Seattle grandson of Capt. Henry Walker 1788-1872 who was a master marine in the East India Trade in Boston and sailed in the American Valant during the War of 1812.<br /> <br /> Enfield's Institutes of Natural Philosophy was one of the standard English physics textbooks of the time being an introduction to Newtonian science. The book went through several editions first being published in London in 1785. This American edition contains Webber's appendix. This copy has been respectully handled over these many years so remains in quality condition. A magnificent written and photographic historical record of Germany's Nazi party to 1933. Book
