Two old horizontal folds a couple of thin stains on the front panel a bit of rubbing about near fine. A program for the film Money Talks in Darktown starring Florence McLain Frank Montgomery Bert Murphy and Jimmie Marshall. The Historical Feature Film Company was a White-owned production studio in Chicago producing films with largely Black casts but which still incorporated all of the racial stereotypes of the period. The company is largely credited with being established in 1915 though this program is for a film releasing on November 30 1914. Following poor public reception to their early films the company changed their name to the Ebony Film Corporation in 1917 in an attempt to appeal to the Black audience and hired Luther J. Pollard a young Black entrepreneur who was given the title of president and general manager. The company officially shut down just a couple of years later. Very scarce. 1936140948510Santiago Lima Pittsburgh et al.: No publisher 1936. Good. Archive of correspondence ephemera and newspaper clippings from the collection of Mal T. Melchades Thomas Montgomery. Overall Good condition with some soiling staining and toning. Born in Pennsylvania in 1878 Montgomery became a railroad traffic expert and worked in Pittsburgh Mexico Argentina Chile and Puerto Rico. This collection dates mainly from the late 1920s and early 1930s and includes the following:

-1928 scrapbook mottled and stained on the front board containing Chilean newspaper clippings relating to transit. Also tipped in is a carbon copy of a letter to Senor Montgomery noting that an "unfair" complaint printed in a Lima newspaper had been instigated by an army officer annoyed that his stop wasn't more conveniently located. Other articles are more complimentary; one scrapbook entry heaps praise upon Montgomery for his skillful management of the challenges of running buses through a densely populated city with narrow streets.

- 6 small leatherette notebooks dated 1923-1932 including 4 pocket diaries and 2 booklets filled with ruled or graph paper. Entries are minimal and consist mainly of names addresses and appointments. The 1932 diary was issued by the Westinghouse International Electric Company and features Spanish-language information about the company and a foldout map of South America. Moderate to heavy wear to notebooks; one lacking covers.

- 2 group photographs in which Montgomery appears. The larger creased and somewhat stained is annotated in red ink and features two ambassadors as well as "yours truly."

- 24 pieces of ephemera from South America including bus and tram ticket books annotated business cards and a pamphlet about the influence of communism on Chile.

- Correspondence and memoranda. Includes a study of a proposed bus service between Santiago and San Bernardo an opinion piece on scheduling a proposal for Green Bus Lines in Queens and an analysis of service improvements in Argentina. The last notes at the end that "the men are impossible in Tucaman but the manner in which they are controlled is the cause of most of the trouble." Workers were discharged before an investigation then recalled when exonerated with a mea culpa from the Manager -- a manner of proceeding not likely to inspire respect.

An interesting collection that sheds light on the challenges of transportation planning in the Americas. 65792London: Hamish Hamilton 1962. History FIRST EDITION INSCRIBED BY SIR WILLIAM STEPHENSON 'The real James Bond'. Octavo 22 x 15cm pp.255. Hardback in dust-wrapper with photographic illustrations. With signed presentation note to flyleaf; "For our friend / Steve Dwork / To remind him of his / brief but hardworking / sojourn here / with greetings and / good wishes / Wm Stephenson // Bermuda / Aug 10/72". A crisp fine copy in a fine dust-jacket. This is the story of British Espionage in New York during World War II in which Hyde as an MI6 agent was directly involved. Sir William aka 'Little' Bill or Intrepid Stephenson is the best known agent in the history of the British Secret Service. A former Great War ace fighter pilot he was chief of the British Security Coordination BSC during WWII. The BSC office in New York became an umbrella organisation which by the end of the war represented the British intelligence agencies MI5 MI6 SIS or Secret Intelligence Service SOE Special Operations Executive and PWE Political Warfare Executive. Stephenson was one of the few people in the hemisphere authorised to view raw 'Ultra' codebreaking transcripts of the German Enigma ciphers from Bletchley Park aka Station X which contributed greatly to the Allied success in defeating the U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic. After Pearl Harbour and the American entry into war Stephenson formed the covert operations Camp X in Whitby Ontario where from 1941-1945 Allied agents from the SOE OSS and FBI were trained to be dropped behind enemy lines as saboteurs and spies. Graduates of Camp X included five future directors of the CIA and reputedly Ian Fleming. The area is known today as Intrepid Park. There's so much more but we'll leave the last word about Stephenson to the creator of 007: "James Bond is a highly romanticised version of a true spy. The real thing is. William Stephenson" -Ian Fleming The Times October 21 1962. Gilbert p.519. London: Hamish Hamilton, 1962 unknown

Front pastedown with armorial bookplate bearing the motto "Soli Possumus Facere Nihil" front free endpaper with animated engraved bookplate of George Oliver Clark with the added inscription "To 'Nona' and Michele with 'Didi's' love - Jan. 21 1948." Joints a little rubbed part of the front joint with thin crack spine gilt a little muted corners very slightly worn but the binding without any serious condition issues and definitely pleasing. Isolated faint spots internally but the text and plates generally very clean and fresh.

This verse retelling of the life of Christ is enhanced with very attractive color lithographs by leading illustrators and presented in a pleasing appropriately somber binding. Foremost among the illustrators represented is John Martin 1789-1854 who began his career modestly as a provincial painter of coats of arms on the coaches of the nobility and ended up being one of the most popular English artists of the 19th century. He studied under the Italian artist Bonifacio Musso and moved to London with his master in 1806. He first exhibited a painting at the Royal Academy in 1812 selling it for 50 guineas and this was followed by a series of other exhibited works most of them huge canvases showing classical or biblical themes some of which carried off substantial monetary prizes. Of particular note was his painting of "Belshazzar's Feast" for which he was awarded £200 in 1821. His illustrations for the present work stand out from the other plates by their scope and grandeur: while most of the other artists chose to portray more intimate scenes the figures in Martin's works are quite small surrounded by imposing mountains towers and sweeping clouds. Humanity is dwarfed by the awe-inspiring divine. In addition to being a painter Martin was a major mezzotint engraver and it was as an engraver that he became immensely popular with the public it was also as an engraver that he earned the largest share of his income. His mezzotint illustrations for American publisher Septimus Prowett's edition of Milton's "Paradise Lost" are perhaps his best and certainly his best-known works. The author of the present book Robert Montgomery 1807-55 was a great admirer of Martin lauding him as "a second Milton" and he was no doubt extremely pleased to have his work illustrated by such an artist. Montgomery rose from very humble beginnings to become a clergyman in the Church of England and a bestselling author of devotional texts. Although incurring the contempt of critics--one describing the author as "a byword for all that is vacant vague and inane"--Montgomery produced religious epics that found an enthusiastic readership among what DNB calls "a large and relatively new class of readers whose tastes and expectations were very different from those of the cultural élite." This work shows up in the marketplace occasionally but it is almost always found in a restored binding and/or in unpleasant condition. John Turrill unknown

188011280Hillsboro Ohio: Highland News Office 1880. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good-. 12mo 290pp. The final section of the book has its own separate title page which reads: "The Escape and Re-Capture of Maj. J. A. Bering and Lieut. EW. J. Srofe with Prison Life at Camp Ford Texas from Oct. 12th 1864 to May 17th 1865." About very good in the publisher's reddish-brown cloth stamped in blind with gilt spine title. Boards mildly dust-soiled with some scuffing to the spine ends and a few small dings. The cheap paper stock is evenly age-toned and the front inner hinge is tender but holding. A presentation copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Bering on the front paste-down to a fellow soldier who endured some of the events described in the book: "Presented to J. L. Day in memory of the days spent together at Camp Ford Prison Texas by the author J. A. Bering. Lynchburg Ohio Nov 16 / 83." The previous owner almost certainly Day himself has marginally emphasized a few places in the prison narrative indicating situations that he either remembered or personally witnessed. The various companies of the 48th contain several soldiers with the last name day but no "J. L." We suspect that he must have belong to another unit which was being held at Camp Ford around the same time as the 48th Ohio. The 48th Ohio Infantry Regiment was initially organized in October of 1861 near Cincinnati and mustered out on May 10 1866. During the war the unit saw action at a number of key events including Shiloh Corinth Vicksburg and the Red River Campaign. The regiment was captured at the Battle of Mansfield also known as the Battle of Sabine Crossroads in April 1864.

This regimental history is rare in the trade and significant not just for its detailed account of the unit but also for its account of a Confederate prison. The last copy we could trace in commerce was offered by Ernest Wessen in 1960 who described it as "quite rare." OCLC lists a healthy number of holdings however the records are hopelessly muddled with a number of digital-only holdings under the same accession number.

A rare presentation copy of a very scarce Ohio regimental history important in any collection of Civil War unit histories. Montgomery this pamphlet's author was hired specially to prosecute Schroder. He had recently retired after a long successful career as a trial lawyer in order to devote his energies to reform in public education. But this case induced him to return to the legal wars: "Dr. LeFevre had for many years been my dentist my client and my friend . I believed him to have been foully murdered by an assassin who after killing him was seeking to destroy his reputation by falsely charging him with the seduction of his wife in order to paliate the murder." Angered by this libel upon his now defenseless friend he decided to "assist in the prosecution of the murderer." He did so without fee.
However his efforts-- "to vindicate the good name of the slandered dead and to assist to the extent of my humble ability in protecting society against a repetition of similar deeds of blood in the future"-- failed: Schroder a man "considerably addicted to playing cards and speculation in stocks" was acquitted. In fact says Montgomery Schroder committed an "unmerciful beating of his wife" to force her to testify to a "criminal intercourse with Dr. Le Fevre" that had never occurred. And LeFevre in his dying declaration said that Schroder had murdered him "without any cause!"
McDade 589. Rocq 923. Cowan 439. unknown
