1847187513London: James Madden 1847. First edition of this historical survey and analysis of the British position in China. The author served as Colonial Treasurer of Hong Kong from 1844 to 1845 but resigned following a disagreement with superiors over the prospects of the colony Martin saw Hong Kong as doomed to failure. He was also a staunch critic of the opium trade. Throughout his professional career Martin c.1802-1868 wrote extensively on colonial matters. "His life was dominated by a self-appointed task - the study of the British empire which Martin saw in terms of a vast free-trade area of new territories in allegiance to the British crown" ODNB. In his dedication to Queen Victoria he describes the development of Hong Kong as a "wasteful application of Your Majesty's treasury. and an erroneous course of national policy." 18460Two letters; one typed and signed and the other entirely hand-written; the first on James Montgomery Flagg 340 West 57th Street New York City letterhead and typed signed in red crayon "Monty" a very amusing and irreverent letter obviously to a close friend dated "Indegardampendence Day 1944" 1944 artistically spaced beneath; the addressee 'Paul' from internal evidence was apparently an executive at CBS radio and for whom Flagg worked on occasion stating in part: "Dear Paul - One of my most favorite characters of fiction and Lousey but Beloved Bastard of Modern Times; Snir; There is a despicable weakness in my otherwise robust ego that lets me write to you on my Model T Corona. I would think my Pride would stop me knowing as I do that you not only will ignore it but in all likelihood wont even read my letter: Maybe you cant read! So you went into advertising. What is this magnetism you use on me It cant be entirely the hope that I can wangle jobs out of you; And yet what HAVE you got but money You certainly are not pretty!.a friend gave Flagg a book on Velasquez.I pored over it and decided there wasn't such a chasm between Velasquez and me as you would hastily imagine. Except he couldn't illustrated Galsworthy-nor think up Nervy Nat while putting out a pair of clean shorts for Philip IV. You have noticed that Velasquez is NOT listed in Who's Who!." and more comparing his talent and lambasting that of Franz Hals Howard Chandler Christy and Hamilton Fisher; evidently Flagg was asking about painting a portrait and ends with ".For the love of Mary and Michael Joseph answer this for-free proposal! Don't be a mucous-minded small-town Equine-Brioche!"; the second letter undated and seemingly from the same period of time and also addressed to "Paul" written in black ink on two sides of plain paper and referring to additional portrait work Flagg is complaining about bothersome staff and getting paid for his efforts; He jibes Paul with ".Did you get a copy of Owen Wister's "Ancient Grudge" I told you I'd like to read it on the air- I doubt if you heard me as you were sitting in a dark corner making fond caricatures of me at the time!." Flagg goes on to speak of other sitters he has had or not been able convince for a portrait painting sitting mentioning a Mrs. Berwith Sgnr. Martinelli most probably Giovanni Martinelli Italian opera singer at the Lotos Club and comparing refusals because of 'busyness" to the fact that FDR found the time to have his portrait done; with suitable funny ranting about calling Martinelli a ".shirt with a voice in it!."; Flagg calls Mrs. Berwith ".she is nothing but a girdle with an angel in it."; Flagg signs in ink "Monty" with the admonishment below "Now pay attention to this letter!" and with a wonderful self-portrait caricature in pencil colored in red crayon and with finger pointing at the sentiment above; letters are perhaps addressed to Paul Kesten who was Vice President of the fledgling CBS Radio network at this time during the WWII years; James Montgomery Flagg 1877-1960 American illustrator cartoonist perhaps most famously remembered for his fabulous poster art especially of the patriotic variety during the U.S. involvement in wars; typed letter one-sided; script letter is two sided; some edge tips wear and old lines; some age-darkening; very good condition and wonderful content revealing the humor and personality of this famous American illustrative artist. . 9770Washington 1889. 38 x 66 cm; 'L. M. Zuncker del.' slightly yellowed burnhole buller through part of title two letters affected'Bvt. Major General Quarter Master General U.S.A. retired' dated 'Washington D.C. August-September 1889' giving a 'Graphic and Tabular Representation of the Progress of Population in the United States from 1750 to 1990'. With facsimile of Meigs's signature. The graph sweeps up in a curve to a steep rise in the latter decades with a partial parallel estimate of the population 'had there been no war from 1861-65'. A column gives the 'Population of the United States' for each decade from 1750 to 1990 with the percentage increase for each decade. Beside this is another column giving the population for the country's inhabitants of 'African Descent' from 1790 to 1990 with percentage increase. Beneath the columns Meigs gives his sources as 'Bancroft' and the U.S. Census and provides a projection of population density in 1990 for various countries and continents including U.S. 399 to sq. Mile; England 389; China 420. He also predicts the number of 'new families . to be provided with new homesteads' from 1930 to 1940 and points out that this will require greater activity on the part of 'building trades and . other lines of business'. A significant document in the study of American demographics by an influential and well-connected individual but Meigs's projections have proved wide of the mark. Between 1900 and 1990 he predicted an increase at a rate of 33.46% each decade resulting in an American population of 1206400000 in 1990 of which 85957000 were of African descent.Note: WorldCat records only one other copy of this important study NY Historical Society. No other copy traced so far.See Image. 18976531United Kingdom: Unpublished 1897. Hardcover. Good. ff 245; 535 photographs. Massive folio journal recording the evangelical 'Beach Missions' and indefatigable preaching to poor children of George and Montgomery Goodman who were members of the Children's Special Service Mission later the Scripture Union. Bound in half red morocco with the backstrip leather largely absent upper hinge slightly tender. Goodman was has used a Partridge and Cooper ledger label inside upper cover about 3 inches thick with the manuscript title page: 'Illustrated Diary of Passing Events Containing 535 Illustrations' and a mixture of black ink entries and small and large original photograps taken by Montgomery who makes repeated reference to his interest in photography as on Relief of Mafeking Day: 'Outside the Mansion House was a huge crowd many thousands strong cheering and singing patriotic songs all day - it was hopeless to attemt to use a camera in it so I got permission to stand at the window. From this elevated position I led the crowd in three cheers!'. The most striking sections of the journal concern the trips out of London undertaken by Montgomery his well-known brother George Goodman and family members to their beach missions mostly along the East Anglian coast at Sheringham Frinton-on-Sea. One such 'sand cathedral' was erected at Lowestoft in August 1898 where Goodman describes the lively activities that drew in young people: 'Bible searching competitions and the Gospel Ship. This last was a service in which we had one object a model of a ship from which several of us said a few words one speaking of the helm another of the Captain the Chart the Compass the sails etc drawing lessons from each.' with more formal services by Mr Inglis Fleming. Goodman describes the experience of preaching himself at Lowestoft: 'The boys and girls listened to my address with marked attention though I did not experience great joy in speaking. I took for my subject "Three seekers."' Every aspect of the family's evangelical work is recorded in this journal which actually begins with a 50 page account of a holiday to South American in 1897 Buenos Aires Rosario up the Parana River to San Lorenzo San Bernardino and Bonnemont recorded in photographs and text. The first of the journal's missions was 'at Kenyon Chapel' now Brixton Baptist Chapel setting a pattern that follows for perhaps a hundred similar mission accounts recorded in detailed and often moving descriptions: 'George Goodman was holding a Mission for Children at Brixton and I went each night to assist him. The attendance was good there was earnest attention each evening to the Gospel message. The Pastor Rev James Douglas was deeply in sympathy and was present nearly every evening. We had a crowded little after-meeting in the Vestry when some who had been blessed at the previous mission four years ago were present and gave short testimony. It was a good time.' Easter 1898 was spent at Bentham in Hampshire with a sequence of poems by George Goodman and images of Bentley Mill pp 57-63. Goodman records a Westminster mission at 'Agricultural hall Mission of Rev. John MacNeil' p66 where 'A large staff of Christian workers had been gathered from all parts of London and these under the direction of Rev Snow of Islington were engaged in dealing with the anxious. doubters scoffers infidels and seeking minds. There is no doubt that the mission was greatly blessed of god.' Good Please contact Christian White Rare Books Ltd for more information or images of this item 1897 Unpublished hardcover
