In 1805 Pike then an army lieutenant led a 20-man exploring party to the headwaters of the Mississippi River with instructions to discover the river s source negotiate peace treaties with Indian tribes and assert the legal claim of the United States to the area. <br /><br />Pike traveled 2000 miles by boat and on foot from St. Louis Missouri to Leech and Sandy lakes in northern Minnesota. He erroneously identified Leech Lake as the river s source. <br /><br />In July 1806 Pike was dispatched to the Southwest to explore the Arkansas and Red rivers and to obtain information about the adjacent Spanish territory. Pike established an outpost near the site of present-day Pueblo Colorado and then led his party northwest where they encountered the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. After trying unsuccessfully to scale the mountain peak later named for Pike the party proceeded southward to northern New Mexico where they were apprehended by Spanish officials on the charge of illegal entry into New Mexico. They were escorted across Texas to the Spanish American border at Natchitoches Louisiana where on July 1 1807 they were released.</p><p>Pike s report on Santa Fe with information noting particularly the military weakness of the capital and the lucrativeness of the overland trade with Mexico stimulated the expansionist movement into Texas.<br /><br /><strong> Condition:</strong></p><p>Rebound. Howes: P372 Limited to 1150 copies of which this is number 734.</p><p>Zebulon Montgomery Pike Jr. January 5 1779 - April 27 1813 was an American soldier and explorer for whom Pikes Peak in Colorado is named. His Pike expedition mapped much of the southern portion of the Louisiana Purchase. Pike was born in Lamberton New Jersey now a part of Trenton. His father also named Zebulon Pike was an officer in the Continental Army under General George Washington and served in the United States Army after the end of the Revolutionary War.</p><p>The younger Pike grew to adulthood in a series of Midwestern outposts-the frontier of the United States at the time-in Ohio and Illinois. He joined his father's regiment as a cadet in 1794 earned a commission as ensign in 1799 and a first lieutenancy later that year. Pike married Clarissa Harlow Brown in 1801 and continued his military career in logistics and payroll at a series of frontier posts.</p><p>His career was taken up by General James Wilkinson who had been appointed Governor of the Upper Louisiana Territory. In 1805 Wilkinson ordered Zebulon Pike to find the source of the Mississippi River. Nearly immediately upon his return Pike was ordered out once again to lead an exploratory expedition to find the headwaters of the Arkansas River and Red River. Near St. Louis on July 15 1806 Pike led what is now known as "the Pike expedition" from Fort Bellefontaine to explore the southwest. Pike never successfully reached the summit of the famous peak that bears his name Pikes Peak. He attempted it in November 1806 made it as far as Mt. Rosa to the southeast of Pikes Peak and gave up the ascent in waist-deep snow after having gone almost two days without food. This journey for which he is most remembered ended with his capture on February 26 1807 by Spanish authorities in northern New Mexico now part of Colorado. Pike and his men were taken to Santa Fe then to Chihuahua where he appeared before the Commandant General Salcedo. Salcedo housed Pike with Juan Pedro Walker a cartographer who also acted as an interpreter and as a transcriber/translator for Pike's confiscated documents. It was while with Walker that Pike had access to various maps of the southwest and learned of Mexican discontent with Spanish rule. Pike and his men were released under protest to the United States at the Louisiana border on July 1 1807.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Extremities rubbed title to volume one detached unread with the pages needing to be separated else very good. The book is notable for being one of the first instructional baseball books. As a player Ward's most notable achievement was pitching the second perfect game in major league history in 1880. Yet his playing career was just a one part of his illustrious baseball career - he was also a manager executive author and union organizer. A passionate supporter of player rights Ward spearheaded the creation of the first sports labor union the Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players in 1885 primarily as a reaction to the NL and AA's restrictive reserve clause. Quite a nice example of this very scarce work. In The Future: A Political Essay M. H. Throop discusses how the Civil War Amendments enacted between 1865 and 1870 placed new limits on the executive branch of government and lent new autonomy to the legislature protecting "the individual from arbitrary punishments or seizures". He questions the constitutionality of President Lincoln's actions during the Civil War and likewise questions the government's aims with Reconstruction. Significantly he dedicates this book to his uncle Enos Thompson Throop 1784-1874 who was the tenth Governor of New York from 1829 to 1832. Montgomery Hunt Throop 1827-1892 son of George Bliss Throop was an American jurist. He was admitted to the bar in 1848 and practiced in Utica in partnership with his maternal uncle Ward Hunt until 1856 at which time he became a partner of Roscoe Conkling until 1862. In 1864 Throop moved to New York City where he continued his legal practice. In 1870 Throop was made chairman of a commission to revise the New York statutes. This task occupied seven years culminating in the publication of The Code of Civil Procedure of the State of New York in 1877. The rest of Throop's life was devoted to legal authorship and the editorship of codes and compilations of statutes and decisions. . James G. Gregory hardcover

Rumsey 0466.065 CS. John Tallis 1817-1876 was a British map and atlas publisher in the mid-1800's. This North American map was in the 'Illustrated World Atlas' which was published for the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London to promote British history industry and culture. Decorative maps with colored vignettes were popular at time. John Rapkin 1813-1899 was a well known mapmaker and engraver in London for fine detailed maps of cities and countries. He worked with Tallis and other map publishers on atlases and single productions.<br /> <br /> This map was published in 'The British Colonies; the History Extent Condition and Resources' by Montgomery Martin in c.1851 as part of the promotion of Great Britain and the Exhibition.<br /> <br /> The color vignette illustrations were drawn by J. Marchant and engraved by J. Rogers. The ten vignettes are an Esquimaux dog-sledge Mount Hekla Beavers Falls of Niagara Convoy of Diamonds Ancient Monument Mexico North American Indians Wapiti Deer and Cossacks. In 1851 the United States had 30 States this map does not show California as a State and does show the Oregon Missouri Nebraska and Western territories. Alaska is show as Russian America and most of Canada as British Territory.<br /> <br /> This map was from the library of the late Dr. G. Warren Smith of Pennsylvania. He had a long career as university professor and administrator and was a collector of over 6000 books maps illustrations and artifacts relating to the Arctic Alaska and Pacific Northwest. Signature on the front wrapper soiling and staining throughout creasing edgewear and three old tape repairsone half-way along the center of the front wrapper another along the entire center of the rear wrapper and another the length of the spine that is beginning to come lose towards the top a good only copy. We believe the signature may be in the hand of the composer. The front wrapper features a typo spelling Harriet with two Ts but correctly spelling it at the top of the score. Issued as Nos. 1174 & 1175 Musical Bouquet. OCLC locates only a single holding of this edition as well as two holdings of an edition with music by John Blockley supposedly also published in London the same year. A rare complimentary pass for the Morman-built Utah Central Railroad a company founded by Brigham Young to connect Salt Lake City to the First Transcontinental Railroad 40 miles to the north in Ogden. The building of the spur was the critical link connecting Salt Lake City to the national rail system and the outside world. The engraved pass permitted Gen'l Meigs & Son dated January 8 1874 and signed by John Sharp. It reads "to Ogden and return". On the verso are "Conditions under with this ticket is issued" describing the company's policy in case of injury or loss of baggage.<br /> <br /> Union Pacific Railroad officials had declined to build the transcontinental line through Salt Lake City a decision which displeased Brigham Young. He formed his own company the Utah Central Railroad which was incorporated in 1869. The spur was completed in January 1870. Brigham Young attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Utah Central held in Ogden in 1869 digging the first shovel full of dirt. In 1870 he hammered in the final commemorative spike with the words "Holiness to the Lord" engraved on it. Four years later when this complimentary pass was written out to the distinguished passenger General Montgomery Meigs the general was still serving as Quartermaster General of the Army. Meigs is recognized for his exemplary role as supplier in chief for the North during the Civil War. In just one year following the First Battle of Bull Run 1861 with no effective system yet in place Meigs set up the complete supply chain to feed and support the Union war effort. Meigs notably worked out the transportation for the shifting supply lines via wagon and railroad.<br /> <br /> The Utah Central appears to have operated primarily a commercial line in its early years. Newspaper accounts from the early 1870s the Utah Mining Gazette show the acquisition of railroad materials including locomotives cars and rail. This 1874 complimentary pass for General Meigs has a surprisingly low number -- it is numbered 130 -- for a railroad spur which had been completed four years earlier. The line perhaps carried few complimentary passengers as it worked to establish itself. In November 1872 the line acquired a new locomotive made by Hinkley & Williams of Boston at a cost of $14000 Deseret Evening News November 7 1872. By 1878 Union Pacific gained control of Utah Central. Union Pacific combined the shares owned by its officers and directors with the shares it had previously purchased from Brigham Young 5000 of Brigham Young's original 7600 shares. <br /> <br /> John Sharp 1820 - 1891 was Brigham Young's personal representative as well as representative of the LDS Church in transcontinental railroad construction negotiations with the Union Pacific Railroad. Sharp became an officer for the Utah Central Railroad and the Utah Southern Railroad and a director for the Union Pacific Railroad Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution Deseret Telegraph Company and Deseret National Bank.<br /> <br /> Engraved decorative border with the name of the railroad engraved in elaborate font. 4 3/4 x 3 1/4".
