184832820701A classic characteristic daguerreotype portrait of Henry Clay the "Great Compromiser" a dominant force in American politics for decades. He represented Kentucky in Congress from 1806 until his death in 1852 with a few breaks for cabinet duty or a presidential campaign–he ran four times without success. A political moderate he brokered the Compromise of 1850 that kept the United States intact.A nearly identical portrait of Clay was copyrighted by Philadelphia photographer Montgomery P. Simons. Simons wrote to the Photographic Art Journal in 1853 to discuss this sitting:"My likeness of Mr. Clay which has elicited so many encomiums from the press and which you have been pleased to criticise so favorably as a valuable likeness is still more valuable for having associated with it a pleasing and characteristic anecdote of that great statesman. This anecdote made such a strong impression upon my memory as being a most elegant impromptu that I am now able to give it to you verbatim although it has been several years since it happened. At the time I took the picture of Mr. Clay he was on a visit to Philadelphia and the guest of one of his warmest friends Mr. Potter who accompanied him to my Gallery."As Mr. Potter and myself were about arranging Mr. Clay's drapery I asked him if he had any choice of position; his answer was 'None whatever sir; I am Clay in the hands of a Potter let him mould me as he will.'""Henry Clay of Kentucky had one of the most superlative political careers in American history. A lawyer by training Clay served in almost every level of government possible in the 19th century: the Kentucky state house of representatives the United States Senate the United States House of Representatives and the executive branch as Secretary of State. On top of that he helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent ending the War of 1812 and ran for President three times over three decades on three different party tickets Democratic Republican Party 1824; National Republican Party 1832; and the Whig Party 1844."Despite being a political journeyman Clay's true home he confessed was in the House. He served as Speaker—and resigned from the Speakership—on three separate occasions but the exact timeline of his House career isn't as straightforward as we might expect from one of America's foremost statesmen. The recto of the frontispiece has extensive genealogical notes by the previous owner in pencil and there are occasional check marks in pencil in the margins of this volume. Very good-. 12mo 290pp. The final section of the book has its own separate title page which reads: "The Escape and Re-Capture of Maj. J. A. Bering and Lieut. EW. J. Srofe with Prison Life at Camp Ford Texas from Oct. 12th 1864 to May 17th 1865." About very good in the publisher's reddish-brown cloth stamped in blind with gilt spine title. Boards mildly dust-soiled with some scuffing to the spine ends and a few small dings. The cheap paper stock is evenly age-toned and the front inner hinge is tender but holding. A presentation copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Bering on the front paste-down to a fellow soldier who endured some of the events described in the book: "Presented to J. L. Day in memory of the days spent together at Camp Ford Prison Texas by the author J. A. Bering. Lynchburg Ohio Nov 16 / 83." The previous owner almost certainly Day himself has marginally emphasized a few places in the prison narrative indicating situations that he either remembered or personally witnessed. The various companies of the 48th contain several soldiers with the last name day but no "J. L." We suspect that he must have belong to another unit which was being held at Camp Ford around the same time as the 48th Ohio. The 48th Ohio Infantry Regiment was initially organized in October of 1861 near Cincinnati and mustered out on May 10 1866. During the war the unit saw action at a number of key events including Shiloh Corinth Vicksburg and the Red River Campaign. The regiment was captured at the Battle of Mansfield also known as the Battle of Sabine Crossroads in April 1864. <br /> <br /> This regimental history is rare in the trade and significant not just for its detailed account of the unit but also for its account of a Confederate prison. The last copy we could trace in commerce was offered by Ernest Wessen in 1960 who described it as "quite rare." OCLC lists a healthy number of holdings however the records are hopelessly muddled with a number of digital-only holdings under the same accession number. <br /> <br /> A rare presentation copy of a very scarce Ohio regimental history important in any collection of Civil War unit histories. Manuscript annotations. ~ A very early Pennsylvania bill of fare for the Norristown Hotel with a list of items on offer including Breakfast Dinner Supper Lodging Wine Brandy Gin Spirits Punch Porter Beer Cider Segars Hay and Oats. Manuscript annotations indicate "Gentleman's Bill May 16th 1814" with handwritten prices added for dinner brandy porter hay and oats a man on the move!. The final lines indicate payment of $4.25 and the elaborate signature of hotel owner Morris Jones. "Morris Jones gives notice in July 1813 that he kept the "Norristown Hotel corner of Egypt or Main and De Kalb Streets" and that "a constant supply of newspapers will be kept for the use of the house." This is interesting for giving an early mention of "hotel" which it would appear was now about being introduced as more pretentious than inn or tavern. It was a two-story stone house forty by thirty-seven feet with an adjoining kitchen. The stable was also of stone fifty by twenty-seven feet with sheds and outbuildings. This property was built by General Isaiah Wells about 1800 and kept by him until his election as sheriff when he moved to the jail. It was long known as the most noted stage-house in Norristown. In 1834 the Norristown Hotel was then kept by Levi Roberts and was offered at public sale by the assignees of Isaiah Wells."
