If you have ever wondered how this seasonal shopping may have been done some 98 years ago then this Montgomery Ward's<strong> "Holiday Book of a Thousand Bargains" - Book Number Six – 1926</strong> is a fine example of a mail order holiday catalog of the mid-1920's. The contents cover a wide range of products including men's women's and children's clothing furniture decorative items toys musical instruments automotive supplies and more.</p><p><br />The First Edition copy of the catalog contains 48 pages measuring approximately 8 ½ x 10 ½ inches. The pages of the catalog are tanned but the text and illustrations are clear and easily read. The overall condition of the catalog is very good.</p><p><br />The illustrations accompanying this description show the cover page of the catalog and four other pages showing products and prices typical of that period.</p><p><br />Montgomery Ward was founded by Aaron Montgomery Ward in 1872. Ward had conceived of the idea of a dry goods mail-order business in Chicago Illinois after several years of working as a traveling salesman among rural customers. He observed that rural customers often wanted "city" goods but their only access to them was through rural retailers who had little competition and offered no guarantee of quality. Ward also believed that by eliminating intermediaries he could cut costs and make a wide variety of goods available to rural customers who could purchase goods by mail and pick them up at the nearest train station.
