À la suite de ses travaux, on « syndrome de Brown-Séquard » (1851) le syndrome neurologique correspondant à une hémisection de la moelle épinière. Professeur de physiologie et de neuropathologie à Harvard, Brown-Séquard devint professeur à la faculté de médecine de Paris en 1869. Ensemble des leçons sur les nerfs vaso-moteurs, filets nerveux qui se distribuent sur la paroi musculaire des vaisseaux et qui déterminent leur contraction ou leur relâchement, et leur rapport à l'épilepsie. La traduction de cet ouvrage est de Joseph-Marie-Alfred Beni-Barde (1834-1919), docteur en médecine, secrétaire du "Journal des connaissances médicales" et père de l'hydrothérapie.
