A movie adaptation of Five Days had been announced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in mid-1933 which was to have featured Jimmy Durante and Stuart Erwin but the project appears to never have come to fruition. Five inscribed titles late in the prolific career of staff writer of The New Yorker novelist and screenwriter Eric Hatch 1901 - 1973 inscribed to prominent resident Tracy Griswold of Litchfield CT where Hatch lived in his later years. Hatch was best known for comic novels his most consequential "1101 Park Ave 1935 which was the basis for the classic screwball comedy "My Man Godfrey" 1936 starring William Powell and Carole Lombard which he co-authored and for which he received an Oscar nomination. He then co-authored another screwball classic "Topper" 1937 starring Cary Grant and Constance Bennett. In Litchfield Hatch was active in civic and social affairs including the vibrant riding and carriage scene which is the topic of some of the books in this lot. By year titles are: THE JUDGE AND THE JUNIOR EXHIBITOR: A GUIDE TO BLUE RIBBON RIDING. NY: Duell Sloan 1964. Inscribed on the half-title. Laid in are 9 snapshots of Hatch driving a carriage one with his wife Connie and another with an unidentified man. THE YEAR OF THE HORSE. NY: Crown 1965. Inscribed on ffe. A comic novel about how a loving father endures his teenage daughters devotion to riding. Adapted as the Disney movie "The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit" 1968 starring Dean Jones and with a young Kurt Russell. THE COLONEL LADIES. NY: Crown 1968. A close friend of both de Valera and Michael Collinshe went on to found a political party and was eventually the first Jewish Lord Mayor of Dublin. This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Edition stated. Green cloth binding with titling in darker green on the spine. Clean text; 340 pages. Light rub and a slight darkening to the margins; else very close to Fine. This copy has been SIGNED in Irish by Robert Briscoe on the first endpaper and again on the page facing the copyright.The dustjacket is complete and unclipped. It does suffer from some soiling and edgewear with a larger chip at the head of the spine. In an archival plastic protector.
