pp. [8], 328. Engraved title page. Foxed. 24mo. 13 cm. Worn contemporary full leather binding. This is a page-for-page reprint of the 1650 Elzevier editions; and the second of two impressions of 1671 (without the preliminary headpiece). Willems 1462n. Valerius Maximus was a widely read Roman author, but little is known of his life. This work, [Nine Books of Memorable Deeds and Sayings] was written around A.D. 30 and is a miscellany of anecdotes about a variety of subjects. It was especially important as a source for writers and orators. The Dutch family of Elzevier (Elzevir; Elsevier) were the foremost printers of their time. They produced a vast variety of well printed scholarly and popular books; many in a very small handy format. Louis Elzevier, the founder of the firm, produced his first book in Leiden in 1583. The 'golden age' of Elzevier printing was between 1620 and 1680. The Elzevier dynasty probably produced their last publication in 1770. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SMALL BOX 6

229 pages including bibliography and index. "Any friend of heraldry will eventually run into difficulties when trying to become acquainted with the customary heraldic practice of foreign countries. There is the problem of discovering which books to study and where to find them, and there is the frustrating experience of seeing one's efforts handicapped by language barriers. I have been collecting information about international heraldry for many years, with emphasis on its pictorial peculiarities and the peculiarities of customs, rules and styles, excepting those regions in the Balkans which underwent different trends of development during their occupation by the Turks... This book is the result. It is far from being encyclopaedic but should be of value to anyone wishing to gain a more international view of the subject. It should also serve as an introduction to heraldry for a newcomer to the field. Chapters include: Introduction; The Sheild; Charges; The Helm, Crest and Mantling; Blazon; Supporters; Augmentations; Differencing and Cadency; Marshalling of Arms; Burgher-Arms; Gentry, Untitled Continental Mobility, Knights and Baronets; Titled Nobility; Princes, Kings, Dukes and Emperors; Corporate Arms; Religious Orders of Chivalry; Heraldry in the Roman Catholic Church; Heraldry in the Church of England; Badges. Glossy colour illustrations throughout. Clean, bright and unmarked with very light wear. Excellent copy. Book
