A very fine clean copy plates and large folding map in superb condition. Very rare promotional for the new Coronado Beach resort area including the Hotel del Coronado. Construction of the Hotel del Coronado began in March of 1887. Construction was completed and the hotel opened in February of 1888. This third issue of this promotional is the first to have 10 full-page separate engravings most showing fabulous exterior and interior views of the Hotel. The inner cover of this work provides a full ground plan for the Hotel del Coronado. The final plate shows a bird's-eye-view of San Diego Bay. The engraved plates show various full-page views of the Hotel del Coronado from the northwest east and the west; various interior shots the inner Court; Dining Room; Ladies Billiard Parlor; etc. Also included are a few general views of the beach area. The large folding map 14½x20½ inches of Coronado Island produced for the Coronado Beach Company shows the proposed subdivision and development the site of the "Hotel del Coronado" with an outline of the finished hotel and its inner courtyard with an inset of the general area in Southern California around Coronado. The primary director of the Coronado Beach Company was E. S. Babcock Jr. He and other investors bought the island in 1885 for $110000 but just as development was underway the land bust occurred and sugar magnate John D. Spreckles had to bail out the company. The famed Hotel del Coronado was the first structure by the famed architecture firm Reid Brothers. It was also the first hotel to have electric lighting. The hotel provided electricity for the entire Coronado Beach community until the 1920's. Very rare most especially in this condition and with the large folding map intact. None of the bibliographies including OCLC mention this issue of the promotional with the ten full-page plates. Earlier and later issues are listed. A very early wine list from an important New York hotel and dining establishment. The hotel was at the corner of Broadway and Eleventh Street across from Grace Church and Rectory. Both the hotel and the church were designed by the architect James Renwick Jr. Named for its original owner Denis Julien the St. Denis Hotel opened in 1853 just in time for the Crystal Palace Exhibition. The building was leased to William Taylor in 1875 who incorporated the Taylor Saloon into the facility. The list features Clarets from Finke Merman of Bordeaux mostly from 1847 and 1848. And French whites including 1847 Latour Blanche and 1847 d'Yquem. Champagne Sherries and Madeiras are also included. A solid piece of printing from a firm more known for fruit labels. Verso contains an unattributed primitive pencil drawing of a horse. Some darkening to the top edge of the recto. Lith. of W. Faust, 105 Nassau St unknown

Archer St. in the heart of Tulsa's historic Greenwood neighborhood the establishment of an upscale hotel for Black travelers and road trippers marked a turning point in the reconstruction of the neighborhood. Just a generation earlier Greenwood nicknamed Black Wall Street for its thriving Black businesses and citizenry had been decimated by white supremacists businesses and homes razed to the ground and as many as 300 citizens murdered. At its height the hotel run by owner-manager W.H. Small boasted 77 rooms 50 of them "with connecting bath / Fans and telephones in all rooms." Date of business card based on the "Negro Motorist Green Book" for 1940 which lists the hotel on p. 39. <br /> <br /> The address 615 E. Archer Street today stands on the corner across from the Greenwood Rising Black Wall Street History Center which commemorates the neighborhood's history and legacy. unknown
64479Handwritten letter on 4 pages measuring 5 1/2 x 8 1/2". With the letterhead "Hotel Utah Salt Lake City Under the Management of Geo. O. Relf." The letter is dated February 19 1913.<br /> <br /> The author writes:<br /> <br /> "Dear Sir<br /> <br /> "Complying with your request as regards attempted Bank Burglaries in this Territory. The last one occurred about one month ago. At Tremonton the “State Bank of Tremonton†This is a small town 25 miles north of Ogden. The bank had just located a new building and was ready to move in. They were using an old plate safe. But we sold them a new Manganese. The new safe was in the vault of the new bank while the old safe remained in the old building and vault. The bank had acknowledged they would move on Monday. On Sunday night the Burglers sic entered the old Bank and blew the old safe. But the Saturday evening previous the Cashier had transferred all the money to the new safe. So the yeggmen did not secure a cent and all the damage they did was to put the old safe out of use. The only other attempts I know of in the past six months was on a bank at Midvale Ut. and Murray Ut both small town south of Salt Lake about 15 and 25 miles. In both cases all they did was to punch the lock off the vault door. There was no attempt on either safe and the yeggs got nothing.<br /> <br /> "I presume you have heard of the First National at St. Anthony being entirely burned out as also the Commercial Bank at Burley Id.<br /> <br /> "Yours very truly " A letter with interesting content describing early twentieth century attempts at breaking open safes in small Utah towns which leave the yeggmen empty handed in the end. The letter is addressed to Mr. W. G. Norris of Seattle WA. William G. Norris was president of Norris Safe & Locke Co. which was a seller of safes. In 1904 the business occupied one of the first-floor storefronts of the Estabrook building at 1336 2nd Avenue. Perhaps Mr. Norris had queried the author of the letter as to how his safes were withstanding the occasional burglaries of the times. unknown
193310324Del Monte California: Hotel Del Monte 1933. Stapled octavo-sized book 16.5 x 11.5 cm. unpaginated 32 pages. Illustrated throughout by Jo Mora; printed on alternating green and yellow paper and printed in black red and green ink. Second printing styled "second edition". Originally printed and distributed less than one week after the repeal of Prohibition with this second printing just thirteen days later. This cocktail manual also preceded publication of the Hotel del Monte's cookbook Famous Recipes by Famous People assembled from contributions by many of the same celebrities and with Cerwin at the helm. But in this cocktail collection the recipes were collected by The National Association for Advancement of Fine Art of Drinking in the year that brought the end of the long drought 1933 tested and sampled by a group of competent experts at Hotel Del Monte. Contributors include Ernest Hemingway Theodore Dreiser Edgar Rice Burroughs the Marx Brothers Marlene Dietrich Will Sparks George M. Cohan Ed Wynn W.C. Fields and Jo Mora. Rare.
