Italian soprano Gina Cigna made her debut at La Scala in 1926. In 1929 she "returned there and sang every season until 1943 establishing herself as a leading Italian dramatic soprano. She was particularly admired as Norma La Gioconda Turandot and in Verdi; she also took part in important revivals of Alceste 1935 and L'incoronazione di Poppea 1937 at Florence and was the KostelniÄka in the first performance in Italy of Jenůfa 1941 Venice. Cigna made her Covent Garden début as Marguerite in La damnation de Faust in 1933 and returned there in 1936 1937 and 1939. She sang at the Metropolitan 1937-8 and also in San Francisco and Chicago. In 1947 following a car accident she retired devoting much of the rest of her life to teaching." She was a highly dramatic and musical singer with a dark voice and an attractive rapid vibrato. I thought you ought to know this without delay so that you can make other plans. Perhaps Mr. Yuji Takahashi the pianist with the Buffalo Creative Associates knows Takemitsu's work intimately enough and might possibly be willing to undertake the article." Washington Street Peekskill N.Y. 10566" embossed in red capitals at head. <br/><br/>Copland thanks Hinrichsen for his letter in which his correspondent apparently intended to enclose a copy of an edited version of Copland's article entitled "A Modernist Defends Modern Music" but did not. Copland will be leaving for Europe the next day and will not be back until late December. "I trust this will not cause any inconvenience for you. I am returning a slightly edited version of the biographical note you mailed me." <br/><br/>Together with:<br/>A photocopy of the 9-page edited article. <br/><br/>Slightly browned; upper left corner of letter slightly creased and with small staple holes not affecting text. Copland is regarded as a quintessentially American composer particularly noted for his compositions for ballet Appalachian Spring Billy the Kid and Rodeo and his Fanfare for the Common Man evocative of the vastness of the American landscape and pioneer spirit of the country. The story centers on Maggie a young girl from the Bowery who is driven to unfortunate circumstances by poverty and solitude. The work was considered risque by publishers because of its literary realism and strong themes. Crane who was 22 years old at the time financed the book's publication himself although the original 1893 edition was printed under the pseudonym Johnston Smith. After the success of 1895's <i>The Red Badge of Courage</i> <i>Maggie</i> was reissued in 1896 with considerable changes and re-writing. Prolific throughout his short life he wrote notable works in the Realist tradition as well as early examples of American Naturalism and Impressionism. He is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. At the time of his death Crane was considered an important figure in American literature. After he was nearly forgotten for two decades critics revived interest in his life and work. Crane's writing is characterized by vivid intensity distinctive dialects and irony. Common themes involve fear spiritual crises and social isolation. Although recognized primarily for <i>The Red Badge of Courage</i> which has become an American classic Crane is also known for his poetry journalism and short stories such as "The Open Boat" "The Blue Hotel" "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky" and <i>The Monster</i>.
